oh, the remedy to my shoe pinching problem was placing a toungue pad between the leather and the top of my foot. until the shoe breaks in, this is only temporary...

    nice.

You've done this in the past or you're now trying it with the Alden's? Hope it works out for you--please keep us posted.

it should be something you can get at any shoe repair store. i have never used this on any previous shoe before..

regarding your problem with softening the leather on the top of chukkas or boots, you can take the curved back of a metal shoe horn and work it against the high-top leather so it becomes soft. i was told this but have not tried..

Hey guys, I've been going through the thread trying to find a worn in picture of Kudu ultimate and regular ultimate Indy's....I couldn't find any except for Adrian's that weren't really 'worn in'.

    Any help?

Also, do we get any type of discount at leather soul? and what kind of exchange policy do they have? No Alden store around me....

i responded to your pm but i'll also elaborate more here. you won't be able to find any "worn-in" pics of the kudu indys since they're a recent item from leather soul, released in sept. SF'ers don't get a discount from leather soul. here reads their shipping/return policy:

regarding the creasing on the vamp that digs into the tops of the feet. this has happened to me on a few pairs of Aldens. The thing I noticed on all three pairs are that they were the captoe design. There must be something about the captoe that makes the leather around it bend differently to dig into the feet. Also while I thought this was just a cordovan thing, a pair of Alden flexwelt calf bluchers did the same thing to me. I gave up on the bluchers quite easily and sort of regret it now. I have a pair of captoe boots in the grant last that didn't start digging into my feet until the 4th or 5th wear. At which point I got really scared that I may had to sell them. I tried something to fix them, and I think it is working...

So I read on Ask Andy About Clothes that someone had a similar problem with their cordovan shoes and fixed it by completely wetting the leather with water where the shoes bend at the vamp. It takes a while to wet the vamp as cordovan is resistant to leather, I did it mostly by putting a soaked paper towel on the shoes for 10-15 min. Anyways, after the shoes are wet at that part, you have to wear the shoes until they dry, which may take a few hours. In addition to that, I bought this product called moleskin by Dr. Scholl's which is fairly cheap as it is a long sheet of the stuff that you can cut into custom sizes. I put that on the top of the joint of my big toes where the shoes digged in, and wore the shoes while they were wet until they dried. I did that twice, and afterwards I wore the shoes with just the moleskin and they were fine, I am still hesitant to wear the shoes without the moleskin but I am hoping that after a few more wears the shoes will be comfortable with just socks and nothing else. The other pair of shoes I have that is giving me problems now is a pair of cordovan captoe bluchers in the Aberdeen last that is also a size narrower than my regular Alden size (I know this sounds brutal but I got them for like 60% off new at a BB sale so they are hard to give up). When I have a long vacation I will try the water trick more to see if they will work on these.

As for welts on the cordovan, I noticed that they are most noticeable on a new pair of shell shoes. I've gotten them on a pair of new shell shoes even after carefully polishing them with the method described on the Alden of Carmel website, and it is usually when the shoes are caught in light rain that you will see the welts. Now I found that they usually disappear or are a lot more noticeable if you wear the shoes again in the rain, or just take a wet cloth to the area where the welts are. Apparently the water will make the surrounding leather more even and you won't see the individual bumps that are annoying IMO. I hope this helps. Good luck making those shoes work for you.

Currently I am the only non-employee who gets a discount from Tom due to the creation of this thread so please don't bother asking him again.

I'd post pictures, but my Kudus aren't worn in yet, either. I think they're too new to really find a "worn in" picture yet

Does anyone wear orthotics with their Aldens? If so how has it affected your sizing? Did you go with a greater width, length? Adam at Alden of Carmel says that he rarely has success fitting people with orthotics.
