That's pretty high up the casual-hike-through-world-war-3-and-back boot. I'm wearing the same weather right now, love commando souls for the versatility and traction.

Too nice for a casual boot? Should I spend $100 more and get shell?

Just remember Leffot has a no refund policy... exchange/store credit only. Some could care less about that, I do and prefer to work with more flexible businesses. Lot of variation in Alden finishing and fit IMO. I love many a model at Leffot and I probably would pull the trigger on the right model, just making sure you know and are ok with it.

I am totally new to Alden and that is a deal breaker for me. If I had more experience with their lasts and such, maybe not, but this would be a shot in the dark...

Making a trip to leffot is a great idea. They have everything one would want for the most part. Get sized on everything and being to aggressively make acquisitions. :nodding:

No, I wasn't very clear, they're great for casual wear! Shell is great and all, but there are SO many other awesome leathers out there. Horween chamois is one of those leathers. Shell is way too shiny and formal for what I would consider true casual wear (not talking business casual). In other words, I don't view shell as an "upgrade" in that sense. They are two different leathers, with two different uses in my mind.

As other have wisely stated, if you are not super familiar with the intricacies of Alden lasts, I would buy from a retailer with a more flexible return policy to begin with. As your addiction and collection reaches a critical mass and you have the intel to move in on a unicorn, you'll be ready to pull the trigger on those rare shell models with multi-year wait lists.

A quick note about that boot in shell: The coveted Leffot model in color 8 known as the "tanker" goes on pre-order once a year in the spring. The order from this past spring still hasn't come in yet. The pre-order completely sold out in under 4 minutes. So it's a fairly difficult thing to snag. I'm still waiting to take delivery on mine, hopefully before the end of the year.

Can you all point me to the other retailers that I should look at? I only know J Crew, Leffot, and Shoemart.

i realize im late to the party,
i would send them back if they were full retail price.
cxl is going to wrinkle and patina very quickly. its part of the charm, your wear pattern will make them very unique. i've seen some fantastic looking cxl indys. but, i wouldnt accept that scrape on $99 cole haans at nordstroms rack. i would get a different pair.

Are diagonal rolls like this normal? Do they indicate a fit problem?

I only now learned of the Mac method for setting the initial crease on new shell shoes/boots using a pencil. Do you think I would have been better off doing that?

Did some boot cleaning this week. Brushed and conditioned the Cigar Captoes and brushed and applied some Cordovan creme to the NST. Ready for the fall!

Thanks. Is that even if only one of the boots has them? The other boot has a more typical single roll straight across.
