Is there any difference between the Perf. Captoe Balmorals on theshoemart.com and aldenshop.com? Theshoemart specifices Hampton last, but aldenshop does not. Should I order my normal size 12D either way?

I looked at the Alden SF site (aldenshop.com). Both the Cordovan and Calf perforated captoes are listed as being on the Hampton last.

Are you looking at something else?

What is the best source for replacement laces for indy's? I broke one of the laces on my black & tan indy this morning. [IMG]

Alden shop...they'll run you like $3.

Go to a cobbler and do yourself a favor if you don't wrap your laces around the ankle of your boot: get 45" laces instead of 54". It is not easy to find flat waxed either.

Anyone here got a pair on Modified last? If so, how do they compare to Barrie? I know both are suppose to be 1/2 bigger, but I would like to know in addition to the length, if the widths are the same as well. The Barrie last fits me pretty nicely and am thinking about a pair in Modified last.
An 11C in the Modified last is as close to a perfect fit that I've ever had. I wear a 12D in the Barrie and the Tru-balance. They're much bigger through the heel and arch - I actually have to wear a slim orthotic to get the support I need when wearing those lasts. The toe box feels roughly similiar to the Modified last in 11C. The toebox of the 11D Barrie seems to be flatter and a maybe a hair narrower than the 11C modified or the 11D Trubalance. I could wear an 11C modified all day, every day and never have a need for an orthotic.

Well, after a lot of thought I have decided to list my cigar Indys for sell. I am still wavering a bit because they are gorgeous boots, but not sure they are quite for me. Size 8E for anyone interested.

My new Ravello Wingtips Cordovan are great except a little tight in the "toe knuckle" area, is that a word? I see on youtube that one can do a quick stretch of your boot with either a broom handle or using ice. Has anyone done this for cordovan and what was your experience?

    Regards.

the few occasions where I needed to stretch Alden shoes, I've been successful by doing two things:
    1) wearing the shoes more, sometimes with thicker socks (this alone with make the footbed conform to your feet more and the leather will get stretched out to a degree. When you are doing this, wear for no longer than just a few hours at a time. If you go at it for a whole day, your feet will hurt and you will hate the shoes.
    2) I wet the leather completely inside and out on the area I needed stretch (the vamp for example). This is done by putting a piece of a water soaked paper towel over the part I wanted to get wet. Other means of wetting the shoes tend to be messy. Then I wear the shoes until they dry, preferably with thick socks again to get the most stretch.

Now I've done the water process with a pair of shell Alden boots, but they were black so I was not concerned about any color changes. However I have worn #8 shell shoes in the rain and aside from the water welts that develop and fade over time, I have never noticed color changes to shell due to water.

If the shoes are comfortable enough to wear for a few hours, then there's probably a good chance you can get them to the level where you can wear them all day long. However, if they feel too tight as soon as you put them on, I would not bother with anything and just sell the shoes or return them and get a wider size.

Thanks for your quick response, the shoes are comfortable for a good bit, then the toe area starts to hurt, so I do have hope for them. I did bring an extra pair of shoes to work today to switch out so I don't kill my feet. Again thanks.

john, sucks these aren't working out. is it the size or the style? i am curious as to how an E fits compared to a D. do you have a wide foot as measured on the brannock device or did you just decide to give it a shot? was the heel area noticeably wider? what d0 you think of the commando sole?

It's really just more the style, however, I am still leaning toward possibly keeping them. There is slightly more room in the heel with the E's, but barely noticeable. I don't have a narrow foot and measure a true 9D on the brannock. I prefer a tighter fitting boot so that you get a good foot mold over time, so I threw in some inserts and the fits was great, actually better than the boots I bought from you.

I know you have had some sizing issues, and you might want to try sizing down a half size and going with an E, rather than a D. Again, there wasn't a big difference in the width, but I did notice it.

And in regard to commando soles, I prefer commando soles personally. However, I will note that I use these boots exclusively for leisure, and not for professional purposes. Commando may not be a good office thing.

I just prefer a boot I can do anything in and beat up if I want and thus prefer the commando and neocork soles to the leather.
