By all appearances those are double leather.

You should get commando given your worries and sleeplessness. :D

Ok ok, I am prone to hyperbole ;)

Do people find the Commando clunky at all? I have not seen an Alden Commando in person on a longwing or the chukka.

Hi. Newbie here and first post. I've been browsing this thread for some time and really love some of the Alden shoes and boots I've seen here. I recently acquired a pair of used black Alden PTB style # 2817 in Plaza last size 8.5 B/D. Not having tried Alden before, I took a shot hoping this is somewhat true-to-size. Unfortunately, even with a soft insole I put inside, my heels are still sliding out. These shoes look to be slightly longer and wider than my other 8.5D shoes. For reference I measure 9D Brannock and fit nicely in AE 65 last (ex. Strand). Is the Alden Plaza last just longer and wider? Are all Alden shoes slightly longer than other brands in same size? What last should I be looking for? I really would love to get a LWB some day when funds become available. Thanks.

I have the Alden of Carmel commando sole chukka new this winter. I have found them to be very comfortable and the perfect go-to in a particularly tough Cleveland winter. I have also had the double leather sole chukka and do not find the commando sole to be any more clunky.

ClassyCanuck: Do these have double leather or Commando soles? I'm getting these or a longwing/shortwing and losing sleep over picking the soles. I'm in the midwest and get a lot of rain unexpectedly so my shoes have to be able to not die if walked in some rain puddles from time to time. Considering Alden of Carmel have both Aldens on Commando as an option or getting double leather and perhaps Topy them just to secure from the rain. How have yours held up in the elements? Thanks in advance!

These are dbl leather.
They are like skates in the cold and in the wet cold.
I have no experience with a commando sole, my guess is that on ice you would be no better off. Not sure about the wet.

You can always just get these and buy a pair of SWIMS overshoes, no?

You don't even need digital cameras, man...though I carry one at all times. Iphone 4 and 5 take great pictures with natural lighting.

I would keep checking. Earlier this morning, after I ordered, there was only a size 9 left and then a couple of hours later all the other sizes popped up. I think J. Crew maybe noticed the glitch (both the $600 price and promo working) and is perhaps trying to fix it - hopefully not!

Soon as I said that - they're back!
