MWS, I didn't think for a minute that you were implying anything other than trying to gather information about my intended use for the boots in question. Truth be told, I am a tad OCD when it comes to the care of my shell footwear. I try to always use the Mac Method before and after I wear my shoes so I can get the maximum life out of them, and to self-servingly gain the approval of our dear "Uncle" who's posts I have sorely missed.

That's a very kind offer kwhitelaw [IMG]. I wish some forum member could be of help to me. I live in Mumbai, India and have built up a four shoe collection of Alden shells (including 2 exotic shells) on the kindness of friends and strangers who agreed to carry the shoes for me on there travel to India. I've purchased at Alden SF, Alden DC and Madison NY to have it delivered to their addresses. But I hit a dead end at times (its kinda embarrassing to ask for a pair each time someone is coming here, LOL). If only Alden fans made trips to India [IMG]

DonL, great combo how you have the eggplant color in your trousers that your color 8 wingtip boots pick up.

Maximum life is my primary goal with my footwear as well. I love old things, but I like being the only owner of most of my belongings. I try to strike a balance between using a product for what it is intended while giving it proper care.

Friends have ribbed me in the past for being OCD, but I'm the one getting the last laugh by still having and enjoying my stuff, while theirs wasted away long ago. All too often, what some call "OCD" is actually just smart. [IMG]

Well said, MWS. I don't purposely destroy my belongings, either. I like to use them and take proper care of them.

    Shawn,

I am honestly not the target demographic for the Crepe Sole as I live in an area with good weather year around and my job typically does not involve tons of walking.

With that said, my main gripe against the crepe sole is how it wears over time. Although I think they look good new, I believe they relatively quickly degrade in appearance. They crepe rubbery part gets disheveled and the front toe part tends to wear away or fall off completely. I don't believe that the front leather tip is affixed to the shoe as firmly as the typical leather sole is when it is attached to a shoe.

Provided my lack of a need for the all-weather-walker sole, I avoid it. Hope this helps to provide clarification!

    -Mike

^^The crepe is also very heavy compared to the other soles.

I had crepe soled alden boots before, and they were just fine. Very comfortable, and while the crepe did look a little grungy, the boots were not made for the office, so it was not a big deal to me. The leather toe area never fell off or detached, but it did wear a little bit funny. Easily fixed if there were ever an issue. Here's what they looked like when I sold them, after many wears. You can see the crepe is a little lighter in color on the sides, but the leather tip is perfectly attached without issues.

This helps a lot mdubs as it addresses what was my biggest concern. I like the look and I love how comfortable they seem to be, but I certainly am not willing to compromise functionality and longevity. I'm a big fan of commando and crepe seems like a natural progression for me but I was definitely worried about how they would look after 9-12 months of wear. Definitely something to consider. Thanks.
