I've basically been out of pocket the past two weeks, time to get back involved in the thread... Here are my two latest acquisitions:

Leffot Color 8 & Alpine Grain saddles (I've worn this with a khaki suit a few times recently, the combo really works)
Black NST in Aberdeen (picked this up while visiting Alden SF - I like the uniqueness of the NST pattern and cordovan combined with black, this will get casual and formal wear)

A bit off topic, but these are my first MTO shoes from Edward Green in midnight blue calf, more pics somewhere on Men's Clothing Classic Menswear

Midnight blue, quite adventurous for initial mto buy. Well done indeed.

I think it is believable that the steel shank, as well as the extra nails that Alden uses account for the weight difference, given that they appear to be a relatively consistent 3 oz (3.8 oz for MrDV's) difference amongst "comparable" models. Keep in mind that Alden (as well as pretty much every other Goodyear-welted manufacturer except for AE) uses rather large nails to secure the heel of their soles the insole (particularly on 270 degree welted shoes) before the heel stack is attached (which has even more nails). Also, all Alden shoes have cushioned sock liners, while most AE's don't, which will also contribute to the ~3 oz. weight difference.

AE only nails on the heel base. They drive short serrated nails through the bottom of the sole and they grip a fiber heel tuck that is present in the space where the cork is placed (sort of like a toggle bolt in dry wall), so they don't go into the insole. That's why AE doesn't have to put cushioned sock liners inside of their shoes, because they aren't covering up any nails that would cause discomfort with out it.

Congrats on your new friends RTP! I'm planning on purchasing the King LHS today. From whom did you acquire those beauties? Alden DC? Agreed with the burnished tan … they are tempting. Wear in the greatest of health my friend!

I have used Lexol on cordovan with no ill effect. This was before I learned on SF that it would make your shell explode though.

Thanks Jedi. Kathy at Alden DC is absolutely great to work with and helpful in determining size.
