I have never done it, but I think you are correct. I accidentally put too much AE chili edge dressing on my cigar LWBs with antique edge and it now looks much darker. I would think the dark brown dressing would work without the sanding, but couldn't say for sure though.

It has to be a complete re-sole in order to have the top of the welt changed (spoke to Nick at B. Nelson about this). He mentioned that sanding the top of an existing welt would fray the stitching. Hook 'em, Repp!

The Leffot website's pic appears that way, but this pic of the same shoe posted here doesn't look like it. (BTW, not my pic or shoes.)

Thank you very much 7FTG, Rtp and the rest of the Alden sages helping me once again to keep things in perspective. As I already have cigar lwb's with the antique edge, there is perhaps no need to make things more complicated for myself. Thanks for saving me either a trip to BNelson or the heartache following a botched DIY attempt.

That said, is there a place to find a Color 8 ptb with antique edging? I'm trying to follow the advice of one of the uncles from a few days ago (maybe Sazon or Alcibiades? Sorry if I'm misquoting) to go for the cigar/color 8 lwb/ptb grand slam. This leads me to a PSA: I just bought lined, Barrie lasted cigar PTBs from Alden of DC. I believe they have some sizes left. Furthermore, they are still taking names for reservations of the ravello lwb expected in ~4 mos.

One last point, and I realize I'm about a week late on this: Kudos to all who posted family pics. Pure Alden porn. You guys have collections to covet. Grails, staples, depth of color, breadth. Just when. I thought it was time to slow down, you guys get my wallet all worked up again. Dear wife and I are gradually moving into our new house, so part of my humble collection is in one zip code and the other is in the new one. Ill try to post pics as soon as the dust settles after the movers leave Monday. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, gents.

It may be that this Leffot shoe comes with both the dark and light welt with the antique edge.

    Thanks dslonghorn4; hook'em indeed [IMG]

Interesting - this definitely looks different than the pic on Leffot's website. This pair clearly looks lighter on the welt compared to their pic which makes it look much darker.
I think Leffot also has a color 8 PTB with antique edging.

Major +1. Every person I speak with about this move says the same thing.

If ever there was a stressful time necessitating Alden purchases off the record with a Visa Vanilla gift card, this was it. No way to justify the purchase of a ptb when the landscape architect is about to come knocking. Perhaps he'll accept payment in lwb's.

Just as a point of information and keep in mind I am not recommending this but I have lightened the top of the welt considerably with the very careful use of acetone and a toothbrush . If you are considering this keep in mind I worked 30 yrs as a certified nuclear class pipewelder

    Some good comments tonight.

    To recap .....

There are color 8 models out there that have:

    1. dark welt and dark edging (most common)
    2. dark welt and antique edging
    3. light welt and antique edging

As stated above, the standard 975 with antique edging added after the purchase (but no replacement of welt - which BNelson will do for an additioonal charge) will look like option 2.

I have cigar LWBs that I purchased with light welt and antique edging. I had BNelson darken the welt (without replacing it), but leave the antique edging alone. I then, on my own, intentionally darkened (but only slightly) the edging with AE chili edge dressing. The shoe, IMO, is dressier than it originally was, but is still easily worn casually. I personally have a hard time wearing a dark colored shoe - with a light welt and antique edging - in a professional business environment. It's just too casual for my taste and intended uses. Others may see if differently - no problem.

Try the Bureau in Belfast for an 8 PTB with antique edge..

I seem to recall some of Leffot;s antinque edge trim LWBs came with dark welt rather than a lighter welt.
Like the ones at the Bureau.

I know many here prefer antique with cigar, but if I'm able to get a cigar LWB, I will likely do the same thing. I like cigar with antique, and my #8 tanker boots have antique (I think it can work well with #8 boots in particular), but for some reason I have a slight preference for the cigar LWB with medium to dark brown edging -- similar to the C&J for RL Marlows. Here are some of Uncle's:
