It is also sleeker than most Barries due to the flat welt, the single leather sole, and 270 welt.

I personally find my lined suede LWBs more comfortable than my unlined suede PTBs. However, they are different kinds of comfort. Most on this thread probably disagree with me though. To each his own...

These have almost been my go to shoe the last few weeks, now I'm thinking about getting a pair in tan. And to think I used to hate chukkas.

Pricey for sure, but so comfortable and stylish.

i'm going to be in NYC for the weekend and i was hoping to find a couple of places to take a look at some alden stuff in person, and hopefully get my sizing for each of the lasts.

specifically i'm looking for the plain toe indy boot and/or sloat boot in natural chromexcel.

could anyone recommend some places where i might be able to find it? or if not, is it considered bad etiquette to try shoes on for fit even if you have no intention of buying? i'm willing to pay retail, but only if i can get exactly what i want.

Ralph from Alden Madison has little tolerance for such behavior, just to warn you.

    Some retailers/sales people don't mind.

IMO it depends what you mean by "try". Are you going to crease them by walking around the store? If so, then someone inevitably ends up with a pair of creased shoes that they potentially paid upwards of $700 for. So it can be considered inconsiderate in that sense.

Not something I like to do because it wastes the salespersons time and people in NYC have little patience to begin with. I did it once to find out about a size so that I could buy 2 pairs considerably cheaper from another retailer, but I didn't walk in the shoes, just stood in them, which was all that I needed to do. Even so, Ralph was pissed that I didn't buy them, and was complaining to the window washer about how everyone wants to try on shoes, but nobody wants to buy them.

Others will tell you that it's perfectly fine to do this, but it's just not something that I am comfortable doing for giggles, out of consideration for the retailer, salesperson's time, and the future owner.

I can enjoy shoes just by looking at them, I don't have to try them on.

Others will argue that "I have to see how they look on my feet, then maybe I will suddenly become interested in buying them, after initially not have any intention what-so-ever of buying them" (That part is pre-emptive, because I know someone here would probably have said that)

It's not illegal, and nobody will stop you from doing it. To me it is just a matter of consideration. I regard trying on shoes as the last step before buying, to make sure that they fit. I can figure out whether or not I like them without putting them on my feet.

Man, I haven't bought any Aldens for 2 months, and haven't even worn the last two pairs that I bought yet. However, I feel like I need another dose. There aren't any models that I want right now, even a little (that are available).

    I'm twitching and scratching.[IMG]

    What should I do?

People running a retail business are not doing it as an eleemosnary institution. They have the store to sell and make a living. You go in a store, take the time and effort of the salespeople without any intention of buying? Of course, that is bad etiquette. T

Of course, it is completely legitimate to buy only exactly what you want. And some may be willing to help you size even if they don't have what you want - you may buy from them in the future. The golden rule provides great guidance here.
