Have to agree with the others. I've been told the same by the guys at the Alden store in Manhattan, and also the owner of Sherman Brothers (who, fwiw, seemed a hell of a lot more knowledgeable than the folks at the Alden shop).

I think this is pretty common on all shoes with thick/stiff soles.

Thanks; I find myself in the unenviable position of finding that I fit in 2 different sizes, one slightly tighter (a bigger but narrower size) but still a good fit, the other slightly looser (my usual size) but still a good fit. Of course I'm agonizing before dropping 600 plus for a pair of shoes. I think the slightly looser is the way to go. I don't know if feet get fatter over the years, but it seems easier to add a small insert if necessary than to go the other way around.

And now that I think about it, actually, maybe this is the best place to ask. Is anyone tired of a pair of barrie-lasted Aldens, size 11d, that they'd want to sell? I'm looking for either longwings or chukkas, and would entertain any reasonable offers.

Pantser: calf. Do it.

And while you're at it, I'm still waiting for cinched seersucker. I think I'm going to randomly bring it up in response to your posts sporatically until it happens. I don't think that will get old at all...

Probably the AF43's on Alden of Carmel's site. They're probably not going to be available in a brown colored shell anytime soon, but the AF88's are similar and made of calfskin.
