Has anyone ever heard of an Alden retailer marking the souls to prevent returns. I was looking at a pair of jcrew captoes on eBay, the shoes each have a black mark on the sole. Sounds like they could be seconds????

I've heard of other retailers doing this, but not an Alden retailer. They say: "do you want us to scuff the soles for you so you don't slip...?" I don't know what they use to do it, and I know that they really aren't concerned about you slipping. They do it for the reason you mention.

I can't recall who does this, but I think at least one maker puts an 'R' on the soles to signify 'remanufactured'.

EDIT-I guess the R means 'second', not remanufactured.

I thought the "R" is stamped inside the shoe by the model/size

Alden seconds have an R on the sole.

Tricker's seconds have an R or an S (I can't remember) stamped inside the shoe.

Yes, jcrew marks an x on the insole of their seconds. People sell them on eBay, I guess they buy them from a jcrew outlet honey-hole.
The "R" is for seconds from the shoemart

I haven't, though I was eying these blue laces to try out with my #8 tanker boots. I've seen blue look good with black shell, and I think I've seen red with #8 here, which can look good, though louder than something like blue.

Absolutely. Because #8 is so dark it's the perfect palette for almost any color laces. You can match your socks and laces, which is quite easy. Or you can highlight a color that you have on such as a tie, shirt, or sweater. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Subtle or garish it's your call. Just don't use white ones.

I wore those same laces with my #8 J Crew cap toe boots last Friday. I got lots of compliments. The Benjos laces are expensive, but they're colours are vibrant and they're of good quality. The "1901" brand available at Nordstroms are great for dress shoes. They're thicker than the Benjos and I like the 33in length. I went to AE and bought every colour Benjos they had in a 54in boot lace. I wore the red ones Saturday night and everybody wanted to see my shoes.

I think it depends. I have a couple pairs of seconds and the Circle R is on the sole for one (Normal) and it is on the inside for the other because it has crepe soles. [IMG] This one is harder to see but it is there over the text near the heel. [IMG] As far as I know there is one place to get Alden Seconds, The Shoe Mart. Alden of Carmel has some listed from time to time but I am not sure what that means. I think that Adam just has high standards and does his in house if something is not right when he looks at them.
