Meltonian suede spray is excellent - I have used it on various suede colors with no ill effects

+1 I also use Meltonian. I've also used AE suede spray. I got caught in a mild drizzle, and the water beaded up nicely on the outside. You may need to reapply every once in a while.

Forgot to mention I have used the Ugg spray and the Nordstrom spray. They all perform well for water resistance and dust resistance.

It's a shame you don't see that color anymore. Having owned that pair of shoes, the mahogany was in between whiskey and ravello (slightly darker in real life than in the photo). It was a very wearable color.

Question for those who wear barrie last shoes sized down -.5 but the J. Crew captoe color 8 boot true to size: Have you found that other boots on the barrie last fit true to size as well or is the J. Crew boot the exception?

Also, I'm very close to dragging my brother into this mess as he's considering buying his first pair of Aldens. I'm more excited about his potential purchase than he is. He's deciding between the following:

    - Natural chromexcel plain toe boot, leather sole (don't have details on the sole), modified last

    - J. Crew color 8 perforated captoe boot, barrie last

I've recommended he get both but he hasn't yet reached that level of irrationality. His foot fits the modified last perfectly but he's a bit unsure about the look of the pigeon-y toe. I know modified last is harder to come by but shell is shell and would likely push him one step closer to geeking out with me over edge trims and lacing styles.

    Thoughts on his first Aldens?

Sometimes I wonder if when a batch of rare shell comes out not quite right, like if the color is a little off, if they just call it Mahogany or #4.

"Oops, this whiskey is too dark, lets just call it Mahogany."

"Whoops, this ravello is too red, lets just call it #4."

Lately they just explain instead that there is a lot of variation in shell color by nature.

(Half kidding, half serious. Not to be taken as completely serious. I don't really think this, so don't yell at me!)

Modified, but only because I'm sick of that J Crew Cap Toe after seeing it on this thread every day.

Well 19 pairs is due to Barneys sale haha. I've bought 4 pairs this year so far and sold like 8 pairs so its a little better now. 2 Edward greens and two cleverleys plus the skoak carmina preorder. Haven't had any Aldens I really wanted other than modified last ravello long wings that wasn't made in my size
    Yes it was haha

Posted most on shoe porn / Instagram never got to a group shot as the shoes were in 3 different locations and I've sold a bunch of them by now

It may be just the wax, but just like others have said, Reno should do wonders. Typically when my shoes get salt over them it stains so it does not appear to be the case with yours. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks! Majority were bought on sale and some just add up from the years. Besides shoes, most of my suits, ties, etc. are not as extensive. Also, my real leisure activity is running and that only costs $90 (running shoes) every 3 to 5 months so that balances out. Trust me, your earning potential is better than what I can do with my degree. :D

    Alcibiades :fistbump:

You'll enjoy the Marlows, they are great shoes. Wear in good health.

Wearing Cigar Indy boots today on a maiden voyage... I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get a pair in 9.5E from Alden NYC... Really linking these, I am really coming around on the Indy (in its many forms) as an all purpose boot

I've seen light and dark batches of both whiskey and ravello, and none of the colors really match mahogany (at least as I remember it). It was really its own color. I don't care for whiskey because a lot of it reminds me of the color of Silly Putty. Mahogany had this fleshy colored base, and then went more toward a light ravello. It was almost the color of coffee with some cream in it.

I have both. It seems like CXL, especially the natural CXL, seems to be a love or hate kind of thing. Some hate the creasing and oily feeling of the leather. I happen to love CXL. So that's a factor. I understand about the "pigeon-y" toe comment and that word perfectly describes it. I've owned my natty CXL PT boots (from TSM) for almost a year now and they are still one of my favorites but the pigeon-y toe look as always had me wondering if it could have been better shaped.

I haven't worn my J.Crew #8 PCT boot nearly as often but I am surprised how comfortable they are and how well they fit my feet. I was convinced that the Modified last was the only Alden last that would really work and I've been surprised by the Barrie. I wear both the Barrie and Modified in a - .5 from TTS. I do not have any Barrie-lasted shoes so I can't comment on whether Barrie boots are tighter/smaller than Barrie shoes, but others have commented on this.

Others disagree but I kind of think starting more slowly is best. Start with calf and then if the interest is there, then start spending more on shell. No good logic there, just what I think worked for me. Good luck to your brother in his quest and keep us posted.

Can you post pics of that year-old CXL boots? I want to see what the leather looks like all creased up.
