I looked high and low for a vass retailer in the US without success. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, just that I haven't found it. As an aside my collection of shoes/boots is compromised of eg and Alden. I tend to choose boots from Alden and shoes from eg. I like a sleeker shoe but a hardier boot. I appreciate each for what they are, instead of focusing what they are not. I will say the lack of shell shortage and some of Aldens policies are a bit frustrating. Extensive lead times coupled with what at times appears to be an indifference to quality control. I haven't had a negative experience with Alden QC, but I have seen enough photos here to convince me that it is an issue. Additionally Aldens price increases seem to be quite frequent which pushes the price closer and closer to eg offerings. Don't get me wrong if shell 4s pop up I'd probably spend north of retail. Some of the prices for Alden shell on eBay recently haven't gotten a little of hand, however if the market will allow it not much else you can do.

I disagree about Carmina: I've had two pair, and did not find them better than Alden. Both were shell; I think Alden has them beat in working with shell.

However, Vass has converted me (apologies for the infiltration):

I had the same experience as Zippyh. Fast shipping and no customs/duty problems whatsoever.

Cynic in me finds the bolded hard to believe. First off, politically and socially, I don't think markets will drop back down in the first place.

Secondly, assuming they will drop prices sometime (?) in the future, and further assuming that Alden demand means every pair of preorders sells, then I doubt Horween (or Alden) would ever "re-drop" their prices when shortages have cleared up. TBH, businesses are in it for the profit margins. To say that they wouldn't keep their prices up is ridiculous. Even empassioned fans of the brand would have to see that.

I'm selling x for $y. All of a sudden, my costs drop. What retailer in their right mind, while demand remains consistent (or even continues to rise) wouldn't maintain their prices at $y?

I love the double waterloc sole. I am reminded of that everytime I wear my #8 Barrie wingtip boots. So comfortable...

Not calling you a liar by any means, but I'll believe this when I see it.
I'm pretty close to 100% sure that Nettleton's in Pittsburgh (of all places) stocks both Vass and Carmina. Perhaps Frank can confirm this, as I know he's been there. Scott, the proprietor is a GREAT guy if anyone ever has the pleasure of dealing with him. He called me up in Nov/Dec to alert me of 3 makeups he just received. I know at least 2 of them were Carmina, I think one of them was shell, but don't remember if it was one of the Carminas or whatever the third one was. He doesn't stock a whole lot of anything, so the selection would be limited, but if anyone ever has the misfortune of visiting that excuse for a city, Nettleton's definitely deserves a look.

Checked the site, Vass isn't listed however, there is the "and others" catch all in there. If frank doesn't post it first I will give them a call tomorrow.

They are the Alpine v-tip (both the black and the brown). I just got these from Leather Soul and really dig them. I've worn the brown a few times already and have been complemented on them each time I've had them on.

I've tried Carmina from Epaulet and was unimpressed. I have yet to try Vass but will say that I have seen a few that I really like. I usually end up sticking with Alden though because, as others have said, it's relatively easy to get wider widths if needed and I usually do. I also tend to like the "blobbiness" (as some would call the Barrie last) and it fits well with my general aesthetic. Not everybody wants everything to be all sleek all the time.

I had their business card on my desk for a while at my job when I was living there. Pretty sure it was listed on there, but could be wrong. Let me know what you find out.

Edit: If he says he doesn't, ask if he ever did.

Edit Edit: Also, not sure if he does the mail-order thing, but maybe.

...Maybe he should start, not a lot of demand for expensive shoes in PGH.

I think this may only apply to displaying the rare shell offerings online. I noticed Leffot took down their blog posts about the Day Tripper boot and Whiskey Tanker. I inquired about it, hoping that a new pre-order might be soon, and Che told me that they we told they were not allowed to post pictures of the rare (Ravello, Whiskey, Cigar) shell colors.

Stmaier, I agree and think that is the case about it being shell specific. In hindsight I should have asked. Our conversation was based on shell offerings. To be fair, the retailer did say it is a two fold problem. The first problem is shell is in limited supply right now, as we have known for a while. The second is Alden's production capacity compared to demand, also something we all know. Anyway, my post was not to generate a storm, I wanted to pass along some shop talk.
