I now size up in all boots to avoid tightness and SF groupthink nonsense.

i prefer european bar lacing, which works fine with both even and odd numbers of eyelets, but if you want to do straight bar lacing with an odd number of eyelets, you just have to accept that one lace will cross the tongue. mac does this!

    Hi,

This is my first post! I was looking at these Jcrew PT boots or the Indy 403 or 405. What's the difference in the leather between the JCrew and Indy 405's? Are there any other differences besides the toe and heel stitching?

    Thanks,
    Owen

in common american usage, saddle shoes can either be balmorals or bluchers (cf. jos a bank, among other retailers). i acknowledge i may be missing something, so do explain your view...

"The saddle shoe is a low-heeled casual Oxford shoe, characterized by a plain toe and distinctive, saddle-shaped decorative panel placed mid foot."

Definitely blucher saddles as well though Oxford/balmorals may be more common/traditional.

Your pictures always motivate me to wear my shell harder. I find myself checking weather forecasts and going through ridiculous little risk assessments before deciding to wear them. I'm making an effort to break the habit.

I really wish I was into overshoes/galoshes. I know many, if not the majority, here like them. And this is not a knock on those guys. But for me it's like using one of those car bras. Yeah you're protecting the paint, but having a few bugs preserved on the hood is far better than driving around at any time with one of those black nylon things strapped to the front of the car. However, I'd much rather feel differently about them and am envious of those who like them.

An unlined navy suede chukka has been on my grail list. I think Roden Gray did a run of these. I don't recall exactly. They're just too tempting.

I have a pair of Alden 403 (brown chromexcel) Indy boots and I scraped the toe of one of the boots on some concrete, creating a small light grey square on the tip of the boot. Is there something I can do to cover it up or darken it?

Saphir Renovateur + appropriately colored shoe cream will pretty much erase the damage.

I will let you know about it on black shell in a few weeks when my black shell captoes arrive, I ordered them just for that purpose although for wear with Navy suits not a tux. I posted about using Saphir Navy Blue #6 wax on black calf a couple of weeks ago here.

If one of my men showed up with blue polish on his shoes for a general inspection I would fail him for being out of uniform. But for special details like colors or burial detail as long as every man did it I was OK with it, even preferred it. In bright light like the tropics or some sandbox somewhere the shoe looks like it is layered with alternating colors of black and blue. In fact for the first 10 years or so I thought that was how it was done. But it is just 2-3 coats of blue on top of black. And inside in 60 cycle sunlight it does somehow look more black but also still has depth. It is hard to get pictures to capture it accurately. In the end it is well worth it IMO.

I wonder if anyone would be able to assist me with sizing. Being in Australia, trying on Alden's is virtually impossible.

    I wear;

    7.5G UK in Grenson
8UK in Mark McNairy / Mr Hare
    42 MMM GAT
41 in Common Projects (suede unlined leather models)
42 in Common Projects (padded full leather models)

I am specifically looking to pick up a pair of black and burgundy Long Wings Bluchers and a pair of Plain Toe's also.

Not sure if you saw this but I came across Navy, Brown and Snuff suede unlined chukkas for 40% off last week at David Wood Clothiers in Portland, ME. A couple of folks here ordered by phone. They had limited sizes but you never know...
