I was just goofing around, since these 3 questions seem to be reoccurring so regularly.

I thought if you can't beat em, join em.

Based on the photos from the Mac's treasures blog, it appears that he wears his shoes outside at least occasionally. Also, people that say drive to work and walk mainly on carpet will put less wear on shoes than those of us that pound the pavement walking to subways. Others just crease shoes instantly when they try them on due to the shape of their feet. Some people are going to put more wear on shoes than others, it is what it is. Just put trees in your shoes, brush, and condition and they will last a long time.

Perhaps, I should clarify. I'm not saying he is pulling into an office building and stepping out of his car like something you would see in a British spy movie. [IMG] I am sure he walks from his car to the building and back. That said, I have recieved tips that he wasn't playing around as much as you all seem to indicate. As for the outdoor pictures, walking out to take a staged photo doesn't qualify as "wearing your shoes outdoors" in the real world definition. Also, I sought clarification from him directly as to whether he was kidding, and got no reply. I did, however, get some condescending remarks from the Gestapo members of the thread who will remain nameless, but come out of the woodwork when anything about Mac's methods come up in conversation.

I would also add that I've not really known Mac to be a jokester. He is normally short and to the point. The question that he replied to regarding not wearing his shoes on concrete was not a joking question, so a joking answer with no follow up doesn't seem appropriate, given that Mac seems to appreciate people tapping into his expertise on shoes.

I've seen some Alden issues, but has anybody seen this on their new Aldens?

On just one shoe, there are two small nails driven into the sole, close to the heel. These are a brand new pair of Alden 405 Indy's, from an online Alden retailer. I already contacted Alden, weren't very helpful, got a standardized email to return them.

Has anybody else experienced an issue like this? And if anybody has knowledge of the its purpose, is the integrity of the shoe compromised?

Thanks guys. First time I've ever seen this, in any new shoe.

Maybe I'm not getting something, but I thought it was vice versa?

Think nothing of it, and I don't know that I'm anywhere near always right, [IMG] but I had good reason to take him seriously on that particular line of questioning.

Mine don't have those but if the boot is not coming apart and you don't feel the nails inside the boot, I would probably not worry about it.

This debate about Mac's shoes pops up periodically. I don't really get it. There are plenty of examples of people who put shoes through very heavy wear, but end up with great looking shoes over time. Some people (like Mac) post shoes that are a decade or two old but still look good. If you take care of your shoes, Alden cordovan can look great after a long time.
