    Dear Seven,

Thanks! It's so hard to restrain myself sometimes.

When did Pontiff Mac finalize your ordaining? This is much better than all those years in Catholic school. Not even one act of contrition?! No recommendation to give up Aldens for lent? Much obliged. [IMG]

DocAlden: Those Cigars with the light edge look perfect. Love the way you put them together with the laces and socks.

As for my involvement with the Alpine boots: I refuse to comment and incriminate myself on this board, but those are some swell boots.

Thanks, Sazon. BeSpiffington inspired me to get back with the colored laces I was experimenting with last spring. He's the one with the mad color matching skillz.

So now you're going to take the high road, huh? It's you closeted addicts that keep this thread going. [IMG]At least I own my weakness. In fact, I was just flirting with the idea of springing for the suede unlined lhs's or a chukka from that link for harrisonunlimited someone posted earlier this morning (again, I feel like Sylvester the cat in that looney tunes episode where he signs up for Birds Anonymous and ends up finding his sponsor going nuts for Tweety). Random thought I had was that we should compile another comprehensive list of alden retailers for anyone who wants to hunt for a particular shoe first thing in the morning. I've been using the Alden Faq from last year, but you kind gentlemen have occasionally mentioned retailers not on that list in the last couple of weeks.

What are others thinking for their next purchase?

    Have a great evening everyone!

Mac is Mac and experience and proven results trump everything.

That being said, I feel like the "do they fit? I'll walk on the carpet," portion of the Mac Curriculum is a bit self defeating...that is, if I understand it correctly.

It certainly works and in a World where creased Alden's that are too big or too small, go into reset mode where they are brand new again suddenly, it's great. I can get creases and scratches out of almost anything, but the people who don't know their sizing are usually the same people who don't know how to care for/maintain/repair shell.

Sometimes, just trying on a shell Alden will crease it and extensive carpet walking will certainly crease it. So, if you don't know your size and you do the whole carpet thing and find out that the shoes don't fit; you're either setting yourself up for an unacceptable return (for certain retailers who will not accept returned creased shell...AoC) or you're creating a pair of shells that are going to arrive at somebody else's door creased; which, now that they exceed $800 with tax and shipping, just isn't right.

This is not a shot at Mac. I wish that Mac lived in my shoe closet and took care of all of my shors/boots as I've never seen such impressive work done so consistently. I just feel like people paying $750-$850 (or more if you go through Europe or Asia) should receive a shoe/boot that hasn't been tried in. Creases, scratches and other marks left on Alden's don't show up on Alden's radar. With the shell shortage, they'll resell damaged or clearly second rate shoes that slipped by quality control and they'll do it because obviously, we're still buying them.

If we don't allow them to do this, it'll make it harder for it to happen. I really don't know of another shoe company from Nike ($80) to Cleverly ($7500) that would be ok with selling damaged products at full price. All of the people at Alden NY/DC/SF are incredibly nice and seem very thoughtful. This must be coming down from somebody in Massachusetts.

i'd like to think that it's just a Whiskey/Ravello/#4/Cigar issue, but it's not. Retailers are beholden to Alden, their master and, if they bitch on behalf of a customer, they go to the back of a line that already is ridiculously long. I recently got a pair of boots from a retailer and they were clearly seconds being sold as brand new. It was not the retailers fault, Alden packaged and sent them as 1st quality. I called the retailer and the explanation was, "that's just Alden. No two pairs are alike. Each pair had some imperfection or something that makes them unique."

this is my last bitch sess, but this is the largest Alden community in the World and if nobody here has a problem with it, in a year there will no longer be a seconds or irregular designation.

I had a hell of a time ordering some black LHS today.

My BB account shows my corporate code in my address book but it wouldn't take the corporate discount off even after entering cc info.
So I tried to create a new account. That failed, saying the corporate code is already in use.
So I get a new corporate code and tried to create a new account.
That failed with "info does not match" or something like that.
It wouldn't even let me create a new account without the corporate code.
At that point I deleted all bb.com cookies and tried again.
    Finally success.

Anyone bought from Need Supply?: http://needsupply.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=alden

They seemed to have had the best price on these, free shipping, and shipped out same day I ordered. I had them in 3 days. No sales tax either ;)

I spoken with Alden dc today to check on the status of the cigar cap toe order, basically I was told it wil be a while. The SA advised me about upcoming calf offerings but said that the cordovan shortage is all too real ugh.....it appears the price of shell on the secondary market will continue to increase. Pretty soon the gentleman who listed his chukkas above retail will actually have to sell them as they could be multiple offers above retail. Glad I picked up what I could while I could.

I have no objection to your post.

Just thought I'd throw in a few words ...

A good relationship with a retailer solves alot of problems. In other words, I have had retailers work with me to solve an issue even when Alden wouldn't work with them to solve said issue. In my experience, even though Aldens these days are in high demand, retailers (or at least the ones I regularly patronize) still value loyalty.
