I never see Aldens out in the wild. Occasionally a non-descript and non-cared for shell loafer, but that's about it...

You see them with some regularity here in NYC... Mostly Indy boots, tassels and maybe a bal wingtip or longwing occasionally. Suede chukkas are also popular.

For the record, I don't look at other peoples shoes. I just don't care. Really, I don't. There was a brief time when I wondered, is that a pair of Aldens? Carmina? John Lobb? But when most people are wearing square toe Kenneth Cole loafers with their suits, I'm not worried. I do recognize that some peoplework in a different environment. And to those people, I say, do what you must. For the rest of us, a LWB or PTB or "dress" boot is better than OK.

Wear them in good health, gentlemen.

The black shell 2161 captoe blucher was my first alden shell model, and works great as a dress shoe. I can't say it is my primary dress shoe - but that is because I have numerous black shell and black calf dress shoes. Today I wore John Lobb black calf WT bals. IMO, the 2161 is as dressy as a blucher gets and, quite frankly, it is as dressy, if not more so, than various bals.

Not a whole lot here in MPLS. I think for most guys who are lucky enough to have one pair, unlike some of us problem children, those Alden's are their "good shoes", and rarely see the light of day. Church, interview, or to impress a girl's parents on a date. I see a lot of run-over heeled AE, and rubber soled Rockports.

I work at Yale, and even here, I almost* never see Aldens or its ilk. The students seem to all wear boat shoes, even in winter, or those hideous square toed things, and the professors schluff around in those aforementioned sneakers masquerading as "shoes." It sucks that it's so boring.

*I did, however, see a great looking pair of pullup CXL Indys today. Now I really want to get a pair to neglect, bring back to life, neglect...for years and years.

Basically never - unless it is a law firm partner of mine who has purchased numerous preowned shell models from me. :D

Thanks Seven, that's just what I wanted to hear. After years of wearing Gucci, Prada, Ferragamo, Santoni, Church's, Edward Green, and even John Lobb shoe offerings, I've found that the Alden Barrie lasted bluchers are by far the most comfortable for me over a long day.

    My pleasure.

Just so we are on the same page, the 2161 I speak of is on the Aberdeen last.

And perhaps your comment about the Barrie last was independent of our discussion of the 2161 .....

Since I got into Aldens, I've lived in Baltimore, Charleston, SC, and now Tampa, FL and I have yet to see anyone else wearing some Aldens out in the wild. And I've gotten into the habit of glancing at other people's footwear on a pretty regular basis.

+1. I've seen AEs in the wild, but not Aldens. Note that I live in a sartorial wasteland.

Live in Vegas. One might think good shoes were easily spottable here.

    They'd be wrong.

Easier to find down by the courthouse and law district, but on the strip there's nothing at all.

I check out everyones shoes. I'm not ashamed of it. I can't remember a time when I saw someone else wearing Aldens ITW either in NY or Pittsburgh. (Except BB Tassels at a dinner party one of my father's friends had)

I saw an Alden for BB color 8 bal wingtip with red laces in my office elevator. I was impressed...

I've been approached in my Alden shoes twice by Alden wearers/fans who specifically asked about Alden shoes. One girl had bought her boyfriend a pair of Indys and really liked my cigar captoe boots. One dude asked me if I was wearing "J Crew Aldens" when was in my cigar chukkas. I see some cordovan looking captoes quite a bit, but a lot of those may be Allen Edmonds.

I've also been asked "Why not buy Ferragamos?" by some women when discussing Aldens, so it cuts both ways

My older sister has a lot of fancy shoes. Like 10's of thousands of $ worth. She thinks, (and I agree) that Italian shoes are generally not made to last, they are more about fashion/design than quality. I own a 2 pairs of gucci loafers and a pair of Tod's Driving Moc's. While they aren't cheaply made, they don't seem as well made as the one pair of C&J's that I have. I'd say my Alden's too, but their QC makes me stop short.

Edit: But in Alden's defense, before others jump on me, they are handmade while the others are mass produced.
