Hello,

I just purchased my first pair of Aldens (http://www.unionmadegoods.com/Alden_Coleman_Chukka_in_Cognac_Soft_Calf_14674_7982.html) along with the cedar shoe trees.

How does one care for Aldens to preserve their look and make sure their quality lasts?  I'm not very familiar with shoe care.  This is my first pair of shoes that I plan on caring for regularly.  What type of paste and brush do I purchase for this pair of shoes and what is the process of applying the paste and brush to care for them?

I appreciate the help!

Google the Mac Method for caring for Aldens. This is all you need to know, with a small bottle of Saphir Renovateur as a bonus.

Personally, between the two I would favor the Shoe Mart version. That is a leather sole, not wood, and it can be replaced. Also, the edges can be dressed if they need to be. Not sure where you live but suede might not be suitable for the winter. PTB in tobacco would be more appropriate for snow and slush. Unlined is not as warm as lined in the winter, typically thought of as a spring/summer characteristic.

If you can only choose one, the PTB might be a better year round selection, but I like the chukka better for a 3 season shoe.

If you can get 2 pairs, consider the unlined chukka from TSM and maybe an Indy, perhaps the Kudu that Phi Psi has mentioned. (though it might not get produced right away, if at all.)

Good luck.

I'll be curious to see what advice others will offer.

Thanks for the advice, Bakes! Does anyone wear the unlined version in colder climates during the winter? I prefer the sole on the unlined version, but think the lined version might be a better option, especially with the Goodyear sole. I'd like these to last a very long time! I'm also concerned that the unlined version might not be too comfortable, or might wear sooner.

Anyone actually have either of these boots or the tobacco PTB? I'm so indecisive!

Thanks! Is there a difference in the care of cordovan vs. calf leather shoes? I notice that most Alden shoes are made of cordovan. The cleaning methods that I've googled (such as the Mac Method) and the waxes I've looked up only mention care for cordovan. Is there a difference for the care of calf leather shoes?

Thanks

To those that have wanted an Alden penny loafer but can't fit into the Van last - call Alden NYC and order a grant lasted loafer in your TTS size. They have color 8 and black moc toe and color 8, black and cigar split toe. I picked up a black moc toe that is among my best fitting shoes.

Any idea whether they can do this w/ a tasseled loafer too?
