1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

If you mean the break-in method, it's not restricted to shell, if I understand correctly. It has more to do with ascertaining a proper fit and breaking in the soles in a gentle manner.

How do people usually size in the Leydon unlined relative to their Van, TB, or Barrie size? I'd like to get a pair of unlined chukkas. I am a TTS 11D, the TB fits me in 10.5D, the Barrie I take a 10.5E (fits in the forefoot but heel is loose), and the van I take an 11D (both lined andunlined). I've heard the Leydon runs narrow, so should I go 11E in an unlined Leydon chukka?

    it doesn't matter.

I disagree, but .... moving on.

We agree on much, as indicated below. :D

in all cases the C&J has a much higher standard of fit and finish/QC.

Generally, no disagreement here - but I have returned a pair of C&J shell boots for a defective finish. They retailed for $995. The return was accepted without incident.

i'm not comparing durability... simply fit and finish. i've said it before, my english shoes look like they were cut and sewn with lasers. incredibly precise.

    Generally, no disagreement here.

new aldens come from the factory with major defects regularly

Agree. This is true - and that is unfortunate for all of us.

A while back I bought and return some of the unlined suede chukkas in 11D. They were definitely tight on me (10.5E/11D Barrie, 11D Van lined and Grant, 11E/11.5D Aberdeen/Hampton). They might have stretched out considering the material, but I'm not sure that would be a good look for that particular shoe. I'd take a shot at 11E assuming an agreeable return policy.

I am 12D TTS, 11E TB, 11.5 Barrie, 12D Van and took at 12D in the Leydon unlined chukka very comfortably. Probably all the reason to do your best to try them on first. I realize not everyone has the luxury of an Alden store to try everything on first to get your ideal size on all lasts, but getting the proper fit is so important it might be worth ordering a few from ShoeMart and eating the shipping to send back what doesn't work. Although I have no clue if TSM has the unlined chukka.
