Any way I can protect the leather soles of my alden boots while walking around the city? I tried on a pair with commando soles but I liked the profile of a leather sole way more.

I recently bought some Alden LHS Loafers and they come with a sole that have the sides finished with a black lacquer (i think thats what it is called). I think it is called the edge trim.

Is there any way to remove this lacquer? I'd much rather have the soles be the natural color

welcome to the exotic colors. it is caused in the tanning process. you may notice some black lines. also, your left and right shoe do not match 100% in the color. if it bothers you return, if not then enjoy wearing your wt boot,

You can put toe taps on them to extend the life, but leather soles on these shoes (and all "dress" shoes) are meant to be worn down and replaced

Shoe Mart seconds list maybe? I just got some chukkas of there and the flaw was very minor - I was happy to accept it for $270 off MSRP.

It's not much, but Barney's designer shoes are 10% off right now.
    Seems to include Alden.

Vibram topy will do the trick... you keep the profile of the leather sole and lose the wear .... I get all my leather soles topy'd and just replace those when needed - at $15 a pair it's much better value compared to having an entire resole done when the leather wears down - I highly recommend this route. There are two or three thicknesses you can get with the topy - I prefer the thickness that is about 1/8 inch over the thinner ones, just for durability... you may prefer the thinner ones since you seemed concerned about profile.

See here for the different types that your local cobbler may carry.

I went in and picked up my newly topy'ed shoes - I got one of the thinner ones - he had them sitting on the counter for me and I wasn't even sure that anything had been done. There was no compromise of the looks.

Thanks, Uncle! I am very excited for my new ravellos.

Furo, do you find that the shoes retain any more heat/moisture (or alternatively, don't breathe as well...or however one might put it) thanks to the topys? I have this done on a few pairs I wear infrequently, so I haven't worn them enough to notice a difference, but I have heard this complaint from folks in the past.

My wife talked me into keeping them. Here's the #4 Wingtip in the wild.
