It depends on how the item is labeled on the customs form. I've paid as low as 4% but typically in the 16-20% range in terms of customs fees for shoes bought overseas. Of course, I've never paid a dime in customs fees on anything sent through EMS, though I realize that the possibility certainly exists.

Did not know that the customs fees do not apply to American-made goods re-entering the US. Has anyone ordering Aldens from overseas had to pay anyway? Either way, you have to trust that the vendor will mark the customs form correctly, which, IME, is far from a sure bet.

Would it be wrong to get the Indy in natty chrome excel and cigar shell? Those two boots plus a PTB and suede workboot would be my main rotation. I'm not sure if the two Indys would be too similar.

I think the unlined Alden LHS for Brooks Brothers, in #8 shell cordovan, might be Alden's best shoe. :slayer:

The shell wouldn't have stretched. If the loafer is on the Aberdeen last (tassel or full strap) it'll fit true to size. However if the loafer is on the Van last (leisure hand sewn) it'll fit 1/4 to 1/2 bigger than what is marked in the shoe...imo.

Let me try this again: Are chukkas acceptable as a dress shoe. With a suit? Or should one stick with a oxford type shoe? Any thoughts?

you're looking for a Yes/No answer to a question that is best answered with "it depends".

are you a banker in London? or a guy who wears a sack suit to the country club for dinner?

No, not a banker. Mostly just khakis and sport coats - even for church and such. So chukkas would be suitable?
