How should i size down on these...

The Alden lwb(barrie last) i tried on has space for one index finger at the back of the heel when my foot is pushed all the way in comfortably. These are 10D. Should i size down to 9.5 or 9?

thanks for the replies. i completely agree that brown is more versatile in a casual setting, and i'm comfortable with my brown shoe rotation for right now. i'd like to introduce more black into the wardrobe though (black boots, slim black jeans, button down). i want the boots to walk the fine line between not too dressy, not too doc marten-y, and not too goth ninja-y. maybe a plain toe calf boot would be a better. it's just hard to judge by looking at pics on the internet. so maybe my original question was as much about the style of the boot (cordovan, all eyelet, cap toe, grant last) as the color.

I just got a lightly loved (nice way of saying used :*( i'm not in the 1%, what can i say) pair of 403's in standard brown chromexcel. the back of the boot from the heel up to the mid seem are they only things that seem worn. they've darkened quite a bit in a blemishy way. is there any way to lighten the boots at all?

any recommendations to lighten would be much appreciated :)

p.s. for those that told me Leather Soul Hawaii would sell the laces individually, I ordered 2 pair from Will. He was so kind and accommodating. Shipped them for free from me in a standard envelope from Hawaii to Toronto. So I just paid the $12 for the 2 pairs combined and that was that. When he told me that suprisingly the postage was more than he thought, I offered to pay more cause I felt bad. Will responded "I only ask that you continue to be our customer in the future :) "

how kind is that??? what great service from Leather Soul!

My 2 cents would be blk cordovan, all eyelet, cap toe, grant last might be too dressy due to the cap toe + sleeker toe shape.

But I have the blackbird blk cordovan plain toe boot, barrie last with commando sole and find it very casual due to the 'clunkier' last and commando sole which gives it a bit of a different profile.

$520ish in Japan before? I don't think Aldens were ever that cheap in Japan as they have a hefty import tax for clothing, shoes, you name it. I'm working in Taiwan right now and they too have a high import tax although no one sells Aldens...

I went to Beams in Japan and saw aldens and was shocked by the sticker price. Pretty much everything was almost $900 or more. And you hear those (including me) in USA complain about 9% sales tax.

My PTB does not crease as bad as my chukka, which I've had a lot less. I do keep them in trees. Here's a picture:
