Hey guys, I'm looking to get my first Alden pair. This is going to be a short/long wingtip, calfskin (I take shell out of consideration because the budget is already too stretched). I'm looking for maximum versatility, being able to dress up/down with trousers/denim. I was thinking of something along the lines of this J.Crew LWB:

Or maybe a darker brown will go better. Please give kind advice to a rookie.

Absolutely primo choice sir! Wonderful shoe, especially as a first Alden product.

The LWB is absolutely a solid choice, in my view the most versatile, and brown is far more versatile than black, especially a mid brown.

If I were starting my collection from go, I would go with the LWB in a mid to reddish chestnut brown.

Goes with blue, brown, grey, denim, khaki, semi-formal, casual, rough, basically everything except your tuxedo, and even then I would be tempted to wear them.

I woulnd up selling my JCrew Tobacco for a pair of whiskey shell LWB, the Ravello is different enough to justify both in my mind. Too close to the Whiskey though.

Does your circle of friends have room for one more?? LOL, Congrats and enjoy wearing Uncle.

Tom, you really are a throw back man. Glad you guys are around, and this speaks volumes about your dedication to us here at SF.

The Tobacco LWB was my first Alden purchase. It would be a great start for you if you can not go for shell. You might try e-bay, as occasionally you can find new ones for $350-400. A lightly used and wonderfully cared-for pair can be another nice option!

    @NYRanger-Thanks for highlighting this post.

Earlier this year, several makeups that I was looking for came available within about a 2 month span. Whiskey chukka, whiskey Indy, ravello lwb, cigar lwb, cigar ptb, not to mention several suede makups ups and one cxl makeup. I bought them all. You have to be opportunistic when purchasing Alden shoes.

    hi,

I would like to ask if someone can give a tip about the size.
I had already a pair roy boots in 10.5D, the length was fine, but the heel was swimming, I had to sell them unfortunately.

Actually leather souls has some nice boots for sale with barrie last in with D. According to the pictogram the barrie should be less roomy, or should i order
    a pair indys in 10.5B ?

please help me, i want this badass boot

If it helps at all, I go a half size down on the Barrie last and a full size down on the Trubalance last (the last on which the Indy is shaped).

Eclecticism at its best. I Alden of DC is the only place I have yet to order from. Maybe cigar cap toe on the Grant... :)

Does anybody own a pair of Epaulet's Natural CXL Brixton boots? I'm considering a purchase but wanted to see a worn pair first.

RWL, please take the above with a huge grain of salt (no disrespect meant to Therendition). I often hear people suggesting sizing down on shoes, but that has always seemed crazy to me and a sure fire recipe for disaster. Aldens are not that rare, you would be best served just trying a few on. Even if you have to abuse the mail-order returns of an online shoe store like Zappos or Endless, you should really try some on yourself.

Definitely agree with this. But just so you're aware, my Indy boots, which are a full size down, are mounds more comfortable than my Barrie-lasted shoes, which are a half size down. But of course, the best thing to do would be to try on a bunch of pairs to see what really fits you.

Eh, choose your online retailers carefully. Alden of SF won't take my orders anymore because of my "history of returns". Of course, I went on to buy four pairs of Aldens from Leather Soul. So I'm not broken up about it.

Yeah J. Crew is probably your best bet, maybe you can get your size, return, then buy from one of the outlet resellers
