Thanks for the response! If that's the case, I won't worry about it too much. It'll add a little character to my shoe. I'll try some Saphir once it comes in from the Hanger Project (for anyone waiting to get an order from them, they're still waiting on their shipment of Saphir to come in from europe).

To nitpick, your jeans are not literally your own creation, unless you actually made them yourself "from scratch." Someone in a factory or workshop somewhere made your raw denim, which was made from denim from a mill, etc.

I will say that, as someone who's willing to be neurotic about his shell -- and leather care in general -- I find myself unwilling to be equally neurotic about denim. I wear Rogue Territory and Epaulet Smith denim, both of which are ~$150 (RT was when I bought it), and I observe generally correct raw denim wearing/washing practices, but just don't have the interest in going to the upper echelon of the category, where everything is a $300 masterpiece. I think a lot of people in this thread wear Aldens because they work both with their jeans and with their work apparel (if the two are different, which they often are). Some of us simply care more about the fabric on our trousers than the denim used for our jeans.

    Horsehide,

I like some of the contrast stitching on the momotaro's, but not enough to drop 350 on jeans. I stick with Tellason and APC - both under 200. Best to find them on sale - much different than a regular 501, but you still beat the crap out of them and don't care about them. That's the point to get the unique look over time. Try a pair - I'm sure you've spent the same money on less.

I will say that, in sizing down on the APC, the denim stretches to fit, but the white stitching holding the seams together becomes really noticeable and can look stupid. However, they fade nicely.

Yes, they (J.Crew) do say that they are CXL - so either they are lying or they changed the leather that they were using since you purchased yours. I don't suspect that they are lying, at least I will give them the benefit of the doubt. The fellow who asked about these could just order them and see...

Does anyone know what the numbers inside of an Alden shoe refer to? Aside from the sizing and style number, does each shoe, or pair, have a serial number or something like that?

But then he'd have to return them when he finds out they're not CXL.

Brown J Crew LWB, Winn Perry CXL PTB, LS Ultimate Indy CXL.

The best way to check if it's Chromexcel is to push with your fingertip from the inside of the shoe. Does it lighten when you do that? If so, it's Chromexcel.
