You don't like them? I've been wearing mine like every other day, great boots!

Ron Rider, Julian, Viberg, White's, to name a few...

Who are we kidding? If we stopped circle jerking about Alden's in online forums, they'd probably stop hiking the prices.

I think it would cost them more, and would slow down their production time even further...maybe you're right, I don't know.

Here's a look at the four boots you mentioned:
Ron Rider does great work from what I've seen here, but is so small compared to Alden. He produces a smidgen of what Alden does, variety and numbers.
Viberg is a hiking boot, and I can't see these being able to be worn at the office AT ALL.
Julian appears to be a $900 pair of Red Wings. Again, from what I see here, not nearly the variety that Alden offers.

White's, again, more affordable than Julian, but basically a "work boot".

Alden is the only company that offers the variety, the shell, and quality at the prices they do, from the United States.

I also think there's a sense of self-importance that forum members have about their forums that simply isn't true. I think that for every forumite that posts or even lurks here, there are 10-20 Alden customers who've never heard of SF. Its the same reason why customers who bitch about quality control here passive-aggressively think that when they post here it'll make a difference. We're a drop in the bucket if you will.

Your quick dismissal of those companies is yet another example of how Aldens are overglorified.

I didn't say that they offered the same products as Alden, but that they readily accept custom orders, which was your point of contention - Rider and Viberg both do cordovan as well. These companies make excellent shoes and boots, and to discredit them as inferior to Alden is simply pretentious.

In other news, in before price hike:

Yeah, those cigar boots are basically exactly the makeup I would ask for if I could. Hopefully I'll be able to afford some the next time they order them =P. The CXL are amazingly sexy as well.

Those Cigar boots are sweet. I just think I know the Barrie last best, so will wait for that in Barrie.

They are a really nice makeup. My favorite Alden last is the Leydon with the Plaza a close runner up. No experience in the Grant, but that cigar cap toe boot from Alden DC almost swayed me into a pair.

Thank you, one of my favorite Alden's, wait I love 'em all.

Thanks. Really liked those whiskey NSTs that you posted a few pages back, a nice stocking stuffer.

Alden DC had them a few months ago I'd give Kathy a call she may have your size in stock.

The Alden factory seems to be running at full capacity for at least two years now. The employees are probably use to cyclical periods of being busy. Working hard all year sucks so they complain to their union. They get a very small raise and pass it on to the retailers.

Damn right. And I'm glad I'm supporting them. Yeah, the excessive prices go to things like a working wage and health care...but that's why it's worth it to me to buy US made. The fact that they are union made is even better. And let's be honest: no shoe maker in the world makes a comparable shoe. Do some make a better constructed shoe? Yes. Do some make a more "fashionable" shoe? Yes.

Do any make the Alden aesthetic? No. Nothing looks like my cigar Indy boots. Nothing. And that's why they are worth the scratch.

So does anyone know how Allen Edmonds operates? They're US made, right? Do they just operate purely on factory construction to keep their prices low?
