There's a J Crew mens store across the way from the main J Crew store. The mens store is tiny but stocks Aldens, quoddy and some other stuff you can't get in most stores.
and yes, dude, if you want them, get them. you're likely never going to get a better deal on them.

As for whoever asked about how to get them to honor the discount in store:
I just called up, asked if they had my size, asked them to hold it for me and then made sure they'd apply the discount. The SA gave me the "it doesn't apply to Aldens" so I told him how I'd been online, noticed it excluded certain Aldens, but the the captoes would show a discount when added to my cart. He asked me to hold, (probably to check it out for himself) and then returned a few minutes later and told me to come on down.

Maybe it depends on who answers the phone, but it seemed straightforward enough for me.

To cordovan or not cordovan - that is the question! Now, like I said, I'm new to this whole Alden thing but I'm becoming a big fan. I'm close to sixty years old have never owner a pair of cordovans. I love a good leather boot or shoe but I don't like to baby my foot wear. A good calf skin leather responds well to dressing and water proofing and develops a nice rich color or patina over time, i.e. basically easy to care for. I have read a lot here for and against cordovan so I'm not sure if I would like them or how they age.

Any thoughts or experiences with cordovan would be helpful...

    Thanks, seer

Horses used for shell are Canadian. Would not recommend.

EDIT: Seriously though, seer yes we like shell in this part of town. It's expensive and crucial to get the fit right, because once you crease shell you cannot return it. Newcomers to the world of shell sometimes do not like the feel of the leather at first. But it patinas like few other leathers. #8 is a good starter shell. Would recommend ordering a few things from Shoemart and trying them on.

As do I. As I posted previously, I recommend the Italian flannel shoe bags that you can find on Amazon and in other places. (The Amazon ones are particularly inexpensive and come in green, bugundy, and tan.)

Think of cordovan as a heavily waxed hide. There is less maintenance because you don't ever moisturize, and rarely use polish. They are not waterproof, I personally wouldn't even consider them water-resistant.

It sounds like you like to pre-treat your calf shoes quite a bit so they form a kind of durable shellac that never needs babying. IMO if you know this works for you, stick with calf.

Cordovan does age longer but we are talking about 30 years for calf and 60 years for cordovan. Irrelevant for most people in this thread who 2 years ago were wearing Air Jordans and in 2 more years will be wearing the next dumb trend.

As I understand it, predominately French Canadian. And, well you know what that means...
