either this (cap toe in barrie last)

or this (plain toe in Trubalance last)

Personally I only like the Trubalance if it's in an Indy. And a trubalance is pretty much a full casual look to to it's greater width.

Really hard to go wrong with a cap toe. I'm really regretting not getting in on that jcrew discount when they had my size

If not the lacing, then the last of the boot does not fit your foot well. The boot is quite distorted at the laces in order to conform to your foot. I can't put my finger on it, but something doesn't look right here.

Point taken. That picture was taken after having subjected the boots to abnormal bending and flexing on their second outing. The laces were also tightened more than usual. The boots are more broken in now and no longer suffer from the issue you pointed out.

this is from different angle.

Would it be possible to simply sand down the edge trim to remove the dark finish on a standard #8 LWB to obtain a lighter finish? If so, how do you finish it after it's sanded? Do you need to seal the edge of the leather?

Yes, but...the welting will still be dark and I think it looks worse if the edge is light and the welting is dark (original color). Now that Alden Restoration won't take this type of "special request" you really need to find a good shoe repair shop to switch out the welting (many people on this board swear by B. Nelson in Manhattan).

Yes, some have done this. Has it looked good? Not really. I'm a broken record these days but I would recommend getting this done at a reputable cobbler that specializes in such shoes. They would be able to do whatever antiquing and/or finishing work you would want.
