1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

Anyone tried Saphir shoe cream on their shells? I ordered a few bottles when I bought Reno but haven't tried it out yet.

It isn't the color difference that is most concerning, it is the rough texture that I imagine will age differently because it feels like it will not absorb oils and cremes in the same way that the smooth, soft leather will.

    ^^

You can always just throw some Lexol conditioner on them. It will darken and even them out quite a bit.

I agree with the above that they will probably look just fine over time. If you don't like just send them back, but I dunno if this is really a QC issue on Alden's behalf

I'm actually more irritated by your selection in socks. Kinda like how some folks wear light brown belts with their black/#8 shells, but hey, not my outfit... ;)

I think your question is really a personal taste question. I'm sure there's plenty of folks out there who don't mind a little difference between shoes. I know my oxblood docs have a little variation in that one is a little more "cherry red" on the toe than the other, but it's only really noticeable if you're like staring at them and studying them. I don't really mind because it's not too far off and as I polish, clean, and wear them, it just adds a little more character to my boots. Those pics don't look bad to me, but your phone (I'm guessing?) doesn't really bring out the real color. I'd certainly not bat an eye at those, but my tastes are not your tastes. My suggestion is that if you don't like them, send them back. You're the one that must ultimately be satisfied with your purchase.

The socks are navy blue and I was wearing walnut AE McCallisters, the Aldens were not worn except to take the picture. Navy blue seems acceptable in this situation.

The consensus seems to be they the shoes are fine but are not aligned with my preferences. Fair enough, I sent them back.

I'm not sure, but I don't think he likes the Barrie last.

I think he's confusing it with the Barrier last - everybody hates the Barrier last.

Aren't those just the George boots in calf with a commando sole?
They look really Frankenstein monster-ish on the Orvis site.

That's pretty much what natural Chromexcel is supposed to look like. This pair is a bit unbalanced in the darkness of the two shoes but they seem OK to me.

Keep in mind that the darkness comes from the oils and waxes and the leather itself is actually very light in color. Also, the cracks you see are not cracks in the leather but are in the wax which has hardened.

If you wore those shoes for a day you would be amazed at how much the appearance had changed.

I wear a 9.0D in the Barrie and 9.5D in the RL Marlows, PTB, Loafers and Lindricks. The RL in size 9.0 was not going to be comfortable for me in the long run....glad I sized up.

All that aside, and also aside from the fact that this doesn't seem any fault of Alden's, I really don't like the look of the natural chromexcel. It just looks awkward to no end.

IMO in order of most roomy:

    1. Trubalance
    2. Modified
    3. Barrie

But it aso depends on the upper that is stretched over the last in question. For example a Chukka boot on the barrie could and will fit different than a Balmoral on the barrie

    But everone's feet are different.

I think this post nicely illustrates why leather is traditionally dyed during the tanning process. The uncolored hide just isn't very attractive to most people.

Personally, I don't think that looks bad, for natural chromexcel. The charm of this material lies entirely in the fact that the natural character of the hide is barely hidden. I am not a huge fan of it personally, but if I were to get a pair in natural chromexcel I would actually prefer it to look something like this. IMO, if you want something that is light in color with a uniform appearance then this is not the right material, as illustrated by these shoes.
