Rob, the flex oiled sole is night and day to the single and double leather soles. It is soft and breaks in almost instantly. The oil in the sole makes almost any shoe that you have great for rain and foul weather. I have 2 chukkas and a navy suede PTB and these now on the sole and love them all. I am looking forward to the Special Edition Obscura from Tassles cap-toes I was able to get that are also on the oiled flex sole. If you do not have a pair of shoes on the single oiled flex sole, then you need to add one to your collection.

One comment I have about SINGLE leather flex soles (based on personal experience) is that they are not as comfortable as double leather flex or oak soles - at least in terms of walking or standing for long periods of time. There just isn't the same amount of support or cushioning. My feets get tired in single flex

Thanks. I hesitated because they look a lot like Indy boots I already have on first glance. But the black shell and no speed hooks got me to take the leap.

I'm all for putting comando soles on boots. I have this vision of putting commando soles, along with antique welt and edgetrim, on the Jcrew perforated cape toe boot in #8. I should probably go do that now....

Can B. Nelson do that and if so, how much do you think that will cost? I might be following you in not soon thereafter.

any reason to think a Barrie longwing might fit different than a Barrie nst in the same size? both shoes (not boots), both cordovan. longwing felt wider than the nst

Yes, because when Alden makes the NST, the shoe is made as a plain toe, then the stitching is applied so the bundling of leather could cause a slightly tighter fit. That is why I wear a 9.5D with my longwings (barrie last) but had to go to a 9.5E with the Cigar NST (also, Barrie last) I got from ShoeMart.
