1. I'd like to announce that animated avatars are now available again. You'll have to reload, but they are once more possible.

We've been doing a ton of work behind the scenes. The site load speed was already under 1/2 of what Huddler's was, on average, and we installed cloudflare, which means that the site should be even faster. A ton more will go on in the weeks and months to come, and some things will be more visibile, and some less.

    Cheers,

    Fok.

So I know I've been dancing around buying a pair of Alden's for months now, but I think I'm returning to my point of origin. I'll be going to London to study abroad for 4 months (Feb to June) and I need a pair of comfortable but stylish shoes to explore in. I think I want to buy a pair of the suede chukkas in snuff, on whatever last Blackbird was selling (plaza?). When will Alden release this model again? When will stockists be getting it in? Do you guys think it'd be a solid shoe for 5 mile hikes around a city?

I think something like the Roy boot is what I would buy if I were in your shoes (!)

    crepe sole for comfort
crepe sole for decent water resistance
    CXL for water resistance
    boot for all day comfort
    all around non fussiness

I would probably get the leather tip of the sole topied for xtra protection. it rains a lot in London

if you consider that a step rugged, you could get something like this boot

or something similar in shell would probably be best

I think the suede chukkas that Blackbird has been selling are just the standard unlined flex welt ones on the Leydon last.
They're pretty easily available from most Alden retailers. Try the usual sources.

J Gilbert has been selling a sand suede Plaza last chukka on crepe sole.
    http://www.alden-of-carmel.com/index.cfm/Shoes-Tan_Suede_Chukka_300.htm

I personally think the unlined flex welt chukka would be a terrible shoe for what you intend.
It's a very comfortable shoe but I wouldn't want to be walking long distances in it. The sole is really thin, offers no support and you'll be feeling every bump in the pavement.
Plus it's unlined and suede, two things I wouldn't want in a winter shoe even somewhere as mild as London.

I'd consider a brown cxl Indy. They're pretty easily available from the usual sources. It costs about the same as the unlined chukka too.

Those are nice shoes man...tell me more about this flex welt I hear so much about? How is it more comfortable than a standard leather sole?
