It probably doesn't bother Namor much because he has more ballin' shoes. Aldens are Aldos to him. :slayer:

I wonder if they are rushing up shoes to fulfill their orders. Large companies like J. Crew are doing collaborations so I'm sure they're experiencing a huge surge in demand.

That's true. I strictly prefer Alden to AE, but these issues put me off of adding to my Alden collection. I understand that things fail, but it would be nice to know you'd be taken care of. In this case, I wouldn't feel taken care of with that repair.

    Hey guys,

Myself and a few others are interested in doing a group order for a non-Barrie shell LWB, and so far there are four people with interest. I thought I'd make another post here to see if there is any more interest. Details about the design will be decided once we have enough people to make this worthwhile. PM me if you're interested!

You Fellas are 100% correct with your assessment of the quality or lack thereof of this repair. The repair, under most circumstances would be unacceptable but my situation is a bit out of the ordinary. I purchased these boots from a fellow SF'er (we will call him Peterson) who just days before bought them off of theShoeMart seconds list. When I received these boots they were in fantastic, brand new shape up until my first wear. While putting the boot on (with shoe horn, always), the back seam split. I then contacted Peterson and he was gracious enough to work as the intermediary between myself and theShoemart. Before that I contacted Alden directly and they told me to go through the retailer. Since I didnt purchase these directly from theShoemart, one hand was already tied.

The boots were shipped straight back to theShoemart about 3 weeks ago. Throughout the process, Peterson was generous enough to update me with every email that was sent to him from theShoemart. I eagerly awaited my boots, which I never got to wear in the first place. I didnt want to get too excited because I am familiar with the repair horror stories. When the boots finally arrived I was pleased with the boots because I at least had them repaired without any out-of-pocket expenses. Additionally, given the nature of the repair, there isnt much that Alden could have done differently. It just looks like they stuck a piece of leather underneath the seam and used it to stitch together the two seams. However it still looks like shit.

Now, I would love to get the boot entirely replaced but I dont want to bother Peterson anymore. He has been a great guy throughout the process and basically, I dont want to be a dick with him. Its Alden's problem, not his. So with that said, buyer beware. Alden's quality is subpar and their customer service is even worse forward, I will contact Alden directly and if they tell me to go through theShoemart, I have purchased my last Alden product. There are several other brands whose quality is significantly better and is able to satisfy the customer. Something Alden has trouble doing.

Haa, I am in the states. Cali :slayer:

    Sellran, these are indeed Ravello

I'm sorry to hear about how this was handled. My experience with Shoemart seconds has been terrible. 1st quality Aldens can be shitty enough, I wouldn't even consider the seconds.

I'm also not a fan of Shoemart, but that's a story for another day.

Understandable Namor, and please do update us about what Alden says. I dont understand why they insist we deal with the retail store and not directly with them.

Namor: since you're going to contact Alden anyway...I think you should make a thread about the QA problems and have members post up as well. You guys own a vast amount of Aldens so it's not like they're losing customers who bought 1 or 2 pairs. Send Alden the thread and hopefully that will do something for them, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Best of luck, dude.

I guess with seconds it's a little more understandable. A little. Maybe.

However, Alden seems to act like a stingy start-up with liquidity problems. They are however, over 100 years old and sell more shoes than they can make. They have got to be raking in the dough after the last several years, what with all the waiting lists for highly priced shoes. A replacement or merchandise credit for Peterson (the original purchaser) was in order, not a half-assed repair job. This stuff starts from the top and based on some other stories I've heard, Tarlow and Company's customer service strategy would be an epic fail in any business school case study.

They are one of those companies in a unique position where they can get away with stuff like this, but it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, if they gave a crap, their following would grow and they could probably charge even more for the shoes and not lose volume.

With all that said, I still want cigar shell indy boots. But without flaws--I don't need 'em that bad.

The good thing for you is that the flaw is on the back part of the shoe, never will be noticed, and the shoes probably look great otherwise. Enjoy wearing.

No idea on the smudge but it warrants the shoe being a factory second. If you paid full retail I would send back immediately.
