Another day that screams of black shell. I like black shell, just like 8 a little better. Plaza flat welt (converted from antique) Indy’s from Yenni gets the call on this cold, blustery day in the Burg…….

Inspired by @WineAndShoes entry from yesterday, came very close to the 4 Wings on Grant but called a last minute audible.

Very nice! You inspired me to pull the trigger on my first black shell --- the model 9071 straight tip balmoral. I need something to replace my 30-year-old Bostonians at the "cap toe" end of the suit spectrum.

Also, if I might ask, where did you get the trousers?

Nice. Alden brothers, inspiring each other. Of course you can ask @WineAndShoes. Believe it or not, these slacks are close to 10 years old and came from jcrew when the actually made quality slacks in non-skinny sizes.

Two recent pick-ups from last week(end). First up are these Humus Suede "Manchester" NST Bluchers with 270-flat welt on Hampton last from Brogue. Add another Handsewn make-up to the collection! Love the blind eyelets and single Waterloc sole! I think these will be heavy in the rotation this Spring!

Second up are these Tobacco Smooth Chamois "EF-2" Perf Cap Straight Tip Jumper boots with 270-storm welt on Barrie from Ealdwine. These are extremely similar to the Alden Madison Indy boot make-up and shares about everything (including the neocork [brown] sole and Thomas heel) except for the toe box. I'm conflicted on whether I'll keep the tonal eyes/hooks or whether I switch those out with brass hardware.

Great photos. These look incredible. I've been thinking hard about the humus suede NST option on Brogue -- the Chiron Tanker Boot.

Love those boots! They're fantastic! They also have Humus Suede U-Tip boots (handsewn) on Barrie. Basically Indy boots but on Barrie without the Indy quarter stitch.

Does the vamp in the LHS 986 eventually stretch out or mold to ones foot? I wore mines out for the first time yesterday and they're just a smidge tight, nothing too crazy but wanted to ask before I consider selling them

I’m also curious about this. Mine were quite tight on my instep. I took them to a local cobbler to stretch the strap area and they’re much better but still a bit snug after a couple of hours of wear.

Question after walking a few blocks outside on salt-covered, slushy sidewalks...

Which Alden leathers and soles hold up best in winter weather -- particularly on icy and/or salty sidewalks, and with snow hitting their uppers?

I'm thinking commando soles are probably best, right? Or is something like the crepe of the all-weather walker better because it gives you more ground contact?

And on the uppers ... my thought was maybe tobacco or earth reverse chamois? Or chromexcel?

I'd like to find a pair of Alden boots that are really good in the winter, but also versatile enough that I can wear them all year.

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
