I like the way a pair of well-fitting Alden’s feel. Substantial and supportive, with the right amount of flexibility without being too heavy. I can feel the quality wrapped around my feet. They even improve my walk and my posture.

That perfectly sums up how I felt when I first tried my boots on the modified last. I could not believe it was possible for boots to feel so natural. They clearly designed that last for me.

didn't wear Alden all day was in slippers, canning beans for winter storage. Cost of each pint is about 14 cents, lots of work, but what else do I have to do????

I bought a pair several years ago and took advice to size 1/2 size down from my normal 10.5. I ended up giving the shoes to my niece’s husband and buying another pair in 10.5.

The common advice to size down for various Alden lasts is misguided…

“Normal 10.5“ is what exactly? Your size as measured that visit to the shoe store? The size you always choose?

Loafer fit is different. If you shoot solely for roominess, you’ll walk right out of them. Things the Brannock device don’t measure can make or break how a loafer fits.

The common advice to size down for various Alden lasts is misguided in that it doesn’t take into account arch length. Why people feel the need to wear the wrong size shoes is a mystery to me and I once read an interview with an Alden exec who said it was to him too...the shoes are made to be comfortable, i.e., roomy. I realize that even Alden may have since apparently given in and recommends sizing down, because people just don’t understand or appreciate the nature of the design of shoes in question.

Arch length threw me at first because I was considering it as suggested by Brannock but everything was a half size too big. Then I went down to my heel to toe length and perfecto. They are roomy with the exception of Aberdeen maybe.

Continuing on the sizing advice theme as I know how much we look discussing that ?. Question for 9D's on the Leydon last. What size Barrie do you go? I've got no experience with Leydon but Frans Boone has a pair in C8 that I am strongly considering. Buying overseas makes them rather expensive and I'd like to get some guidance before pulling the trigger. I go Barrie 8.5D and the common wisdom is that 9D Leydon should work but searches on Leydon seem to be all over the place.

Any insight is appreciated.

Are they loafers? Leydon loafers fit larger than the chukkas.

The only style on Leydon that I find runs narrow is the unlined chukka. I had the unlined loafer and took my brannock or a half size up from barrie for a good fit

This is how I'm hoping it plays out and consistent with my research. The part that unclear is that the length seems to be longer and I don't know what that means.

Actually these are bluchers, which really adds to the concern as most of my research seems to indicate that Leydon is mostly chukkas and loafers.

This is V-e-r-y helpful. I didn't want to add the complication of the unlined chukka to the equation and you addressed it anyway.

It's a risk but based on the responses from both @Mr Clemson and @jischwar, sounds like 9D should work. Think I'm going for it.
