Bumping this up. FYI, this 12 pair order just got confirmed so if anyone is eager for a pair they'd need to contact Twill immediately, especially if you need non-D width. Delivery probably late October to mid-November.

Dang Brett, those sound superb! Guess that I got a couple of hours to think...!

Total novice questions, anyone who knows anything about makeups please indulge me --
  • Anyone know how many hides it takes to make a 12 pair run of shoes?
  • Any info on the minimum grade requirements of leather Alden will use? I got back grade info from a guy I called at Horween, but I don't know if it's relevant
  • Is what Alden calls Tobacco Chamois what Horween calls Rust, or are they different?

For the first, depends on the size of the pairs and whether they're shoes or boots...if they're doing a one size each run would have different amounts used than a bunch of smaller sizes or a run with a bunch of 11EEE and 14D pairs. This is especially important when dealing with shell, because I think a 15D boot can eat up 3 or 4 shells as I recall.

If your aim is to buy enough hides yourself for a run of shoes and ship them to Alden to make, you can forget about it, because they're definitely not going to do that. It was asked about in the past and firmly rejected.

Good to know this has been explored and is a dead end. I was thinking of seeing if I could source the leather myself and then go through a shop to do the makeup. Do you know at what stage there was a snag in prior plans? Is it that they don't want individuals just going directly to Alden, or that they only have a pre-approved set of leathers, and they wouldn't accept leather not on that list, even if "backed" by an established dealer? Maybe both?

It's just not something that Alden is going to agree to do. You can certainly try again, but it won't happen.

It's likely a combination of it being more trouble for them than it's worth as the factory certainly isn't hurting for orders at the moment coupled with potential claims/liability (e.g., which party is responsible if one of the hides tears and is rendered unusable). It's the same reason most car dealers will only install parts you purchased through them.

Time to grill, and I know me and grilling, so no way Country Calf boots would work. Changed to a more "impervious to stains" Indy boot

I looked at the picture and thought "Wow, that style is a lot like my pair." Then I realized they were mine. I can be an idiot at times.

I, too, changed into more appropriate grill footwear tonight.
