My first pair of Alden shoes in #8. I wanted a timeless classic for fall and winter. 20171006_082436.jpg

Allen Edmonds Sullivan Street. Didn't want to cross pollinate non Alden shoes but I had little time for pictures today.

Those look nice! Do they start out that color or lighten up? Hopefully Jcrew will restock them in my size eventually.

Got my new black shell cp boots to say and I have to say, I am pretty disappointed. I found three missed punches and some pretty ragged stitching on the facing. Do you think it is justified to ask for a different pair?

Those look great. I like the light colored laces. Where are they from?

Also, interesting that the welt stitching extends all the way around the heel on these. Is this something unique to the J. Crew kudu leather version of the Indy boot?

The holes in the backstay area is normal, you can find holes in the exact same area on almost every pair of Alden boots.

But I agree the ragged stitching and that hole on the vamp look pretty bad, I would return it.

For the price of shell boots, yes. And because they're semi-formal, so imperfections won't necessarily add character...

You can try, but I think you may be declined, depending on what store you bought them from. There's also a very high probability that there won't be a replacement pair for you, as most stores usually only stock 1 or 2 pairs in each size.

As for the quality, as people mentioned the backstay holes are always there. That's where they nail the upper to the last. Not all, but many shoemakers do the same. The part where the facing stitching is less neat is also pretty typical for Aldens. Lots of my pairs have had similar difficulty around that same spot, and even my EG Galways as well. I think, with what you showed in those pictures, you have about as good a boot as you'll get with alden.

Thanks! They might have lightened up a tad since I've had them. I'm really happy with the color and they have held up great with about no maintenance.
Laces are TZ Laces from Amazon.

I agree with most of your post, though I don't agree with this. The lasting holes don't bother me, but I only have them on my shell captoe boots (maybe is a lasting technique with shell?). I don't have anything with stitching that looks like that. I've got some medicre welt-joins and some sole stitching that runs pretty close to the edge, etc.

I get high expectations with $700+ shoes/boots. I'd be on the fence about a return, but would lean toward keep.

I have tacking holes on shoes from Alden, Carmina, Vass, and Bonafe. It's kinda part of the shoemaking process.

The stitching is a little iffy. OP may as well see if there is another pair you can exchange it for, but I don't think it's out of spec for Alden, to be honest. Even EG has difficulty stitching shell perfectly clean all the time.

Also the price premium is clearly due to using expensive leather, and doesn't necessarily speak to the pair being made to a higher standard than calf or suede models.
