Hello gents, I'm in Japan for a work trip, and just found out I have a free day in Tokyo tomorrow. So, where should I go look at Aldens? :)

They aren't easy to find, are carried in smaller sizes and are really expensive. I'd punt and just wander around the Mejji Shrine, Harajuku and Omotesando, all of which are close together (take the Metro to the Harajuku station). That's a solid 1/2 day at least. If you have more time Shinjuku or Akihabara are both awesome too
Tokyo is awesome for a lot of things, but Alden isn't one of them... ;)
(I just got back from Tokyo on Thursday night)

I'm trying to get a feel for how reverse tobacco chamois and the regular tobacco chamois compare. By any chance does anyone have a picture of them together for comparison sake? Or even some input on how they compare, at least cosmetically. I know it's a long shot but wanted to ask. Thanks!

That makes since that alden is more expensive in japan. Everytime I visit leathersoul, I would see the tourist buy out a lot of the Aldens. While I was taking my time trying on shoes, I would see 4 japanese in a row come into the store to try on quickly and pay right away. No looking in mirror or anything. Alden must be really popular in japan.

Thanks for the info and advice! I should have mentioned that the modified last works well for my odd feet, so I was hoping I might find some here. Although, I do have quite large feet, so that might not work well if they stock smaller sizes.

That isn't too far from Harajuku/Omotesando, so you could definitely work that in. Get a Passmo card (train card) and have some fun - the Tokyo metro is outstanding. Just remember - stand left, walk right on the escalators! (and make sure you aren't on a ladies car during morning/evening rush hours) :)

I actually have both but don't have any pictures of them side by side. You could search my post history though as I've had both smooth (vintage Indy) and reverse (wingtip boot) up for sale. There are plenty of pictures in both classified listing.

Think nubuck (smooth chamois) versus suede (reverse chamois).
They are both very oily leathers. The smooth gives you the feel of calf that has been lightly sanded with superfine sandpaper and then oiled. The reverse is a very heavy (rugged) nap suede that has been oiled. Reverse leather is the the flesh side of the animal.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I have a pair in the "regular" tobacco chamois, just trying to get a feel for the reverse chamois. The color looks totally different in the photos I've seen. Must be just the rougher nature of the leather.

Speaking of snuff suede, here's a pic of some well worn snuff next to relatively new.

    Twisted ankle boot day..
NST Trubalance lasted Antique Welt and no Commando, solid double leather soles, nothing fancy sole wise, my preference.. but, it gets slick out, Commando is king no doubt, a must have.
