Now I'm in real, real trouble...
Felling lucky to have these whiskey LHS, a rare model these days it seems. Was not on a secret preorder or even a list, plain old luck and being on the forum at the right time for a kind person here to post a PSA that they had my size left at Alden SF.
Had similar luck with my Ravello LWB, saw pics of a run from DC and called to get on the list for the next round and was lucky enough to have them tell me they had my size ready to ship right away due to people who dropped out their spot on the list for that run.
These are now just over 2 years old.
I'm a big fan of Leffot, having been a customer since they opened basically. They have a vey transparent system for online ordering and preordering for most Alden models, but for rare shell they do have customers they proactively notify. Other retailers have similar policies, while some are more open. Unfortunately the rare shell has to be allocated somehow. Having been on both sides of this issue I understand the frustration.
After buying Aldens from almost every major retailer Leffot, DC, AOM, Epaulet (which is very open on rare shell and basically get none), TSM, Frans Boone, AOC, and LS, I can confidently say that DC is likely my favorite shop. If you want a shell boot or shoe and they regularly stock it, you can get on a list even if you have 0 purchases from them. Will you get it tomorrow? No, but you can guarantee at some point your turn will come.
Least favorites LS and Leffot, it's like a secret underworld based on money you spend or lucky word of mouth from being friends who spend a lot there. I've gotten boots from both so I've partaken in this secret world but I can confidently say that I still prefer it the least.
Let's be honest...life is not fair and neither is rare shell. When there is 12 pairs of a makeup there's no way you can take care of everyone. If you have customers who do a lot of business with you...that's the ones that should be taken care of if a list is not in place.
I certainly hope nobody expects retailers to follow some system we think is "fair" or "just". How about we do the Bernie system? Everyone who has more 2 or more pairs of rare shell must give to those who don't. Specially #4 and #2...lets see how that works. How about a lottery...everybody submits their name and some random guy gets lucky and wins then flips them for 4X retail...well here comes the bitching anyway. For God's sake this is America...lets leave who wins or loses in scoring rare shell alone. Let each retailer do whatever the hell they want to and not turn that into a Socialist operation too! Oh wait...the existing Prez said its not their business, never mind they built it. Let's just give away our shell shoes and boots to those more in need. They can flip for big bucks and go buy booze and crack and everybody is happy.
That's what we've been discussing righteous and fair...lets roll!
Grey and wet in NYC, so not the best conditions for photo taking... Sunlight, outdoor photos tomorrow
@Alcibiades those are sick man. Thanks for posting.
In all fairness man we are not talking about donating things or giving things away. We are talking about purchasing 800 dollar shoes or boots.
We are here to share information on all things Alden. Part of that sharing is too help new enthusiasts of the brand find shoes or boots that they want. In that helping mind frame I think it's fair to share past experiences with retailers that may or may not help someone score the pair they are longing for. I like Alden but I'm not going to pretend we should have no opinion of the retailers practices.
Totally appropriate place for this rant.
Like I said previously if I buy 10 pairs of aldens from a retailer I would hope to receive the nod for the rare make ups.
I have no rare shell yet, but I've put my name down for some. I have no problem with waiting however long as there's a lot of other shoes/boots I want besides Alden, or even in the case of Alden's, different leather varieties. I found out early on, it's just how it is with Alden, and you can either wait, buy used, or not.
Sorry, I and 11 other gents have bought 11 or more pairs. You will have to wait!
I'm hoping someone with more experience with shell can answer a question for me. The upper part of my color #8 boots appear "cloudy", for lack of a better term, as shown in the attached picture. No matter how much I brush them I can't get rid of this discoloration. I've never applied any product to the boots so it's not an issue of buildup. Is there anything I can do about this? It's not a huge deal because it's covered by my pants, but if there is a solution I'd love to hear it.
Thanks for your help.
It happens lol
