Admittedly I haven't run down every angle of the badminton story, but what I'm failing to understand is how losing gave you better position in the tournament. In most tournaments, a higher seed has an easier run to the finals as they draw all the lowest seeds in the bracket - it's why Nadal doesn't play Djokovic until the final. Am I missing something, or was there a particular team all four of these teams were trying to avoid drawing who had already lost in a fluke and had an artificially low seed as a result?

I can't believe I'm putting this much thought into badminton. Shuttlecocks.

I think there were upsets earlier in the round-robin, and the Chinese were trying to avoid having two of their own teams face one another in such a way that it would eliminate one of them from medal contention. I think the other teams were trying to arrange to play against teams they believed would be weaker, and only by losing could they make this happen given the previous upsets. These sorts of shenanigans would be easy to eliminate if they would get rid of the new-fangled pool-play prelims, and go back to single-elimination.

    eggsactly.

The pool-play though was put in place so that teams wouldn't travel 5K miles, lose their first game and have to go home.

BTW, where are you guys seeing these events? During the day? Cause primetime olympics sucks!

+1. I haven't seen a single thing other than swimming and gymnastics in primetime.

There was some white water rafting today. That was fucking weird.

Dude, seriously, everything is streaming online. And the daytime coverage is live and so much better.

    Gymnastics spoilers

Go Gabby. I was rooting for Aly to win because I felt like she got unfairly dismissed in favor of talking about how upset her favored teammate was, but Douglas was just great through the whole Olympics and deserves that medal

Here in Canadia they run the stuff live on TV all day every day, and then repeat/canned stuff at night

Olympic boxing WTF. Actually, FTL. Abdulhamidov - Shimizu was just about comical in its ending, and the only redeeming factor was the boos at the end.

the other great thing about streaming is that you can watch as many events as your screen space and bandwidth allow

True, but some don't have any commentators.

I know some of them are annoying as hell, but for some of the events I still need some analysis.

American girl won the first ever gold for an American in Judo. Anyone want to take the over-under on whether NBC shows more than the last 30 seconds of the match in primetime tonight?

It was awesome, she's one of the best stories of the Olympics.

    I'll take the under.

    Fuck You NBC.

I don't care for streaming, I don't like to watch "TV" on a 17 inch screen.

Been thinking about the archery and shooting events and have decided that they aren't athletic enough. Contrast them to the winter event biathlon, which is shooting and Nordic skiing. Race for 10 or 20 km, interrupted by stop, aim, and fire. Miss and it's a penalty lap. From the looks of some of these chubby summer shooters and archers they could use a bit of running in their lives. Be even better if a horse riding component was added too. Start on the horse and jump several gates. Dismount and run a steeplechase interspersed with shooting. Remount the horse. Maybe shoot a target from atop the horse too.

Still have to wait a week for the pentathlon. :(
