As many of you may know, Helmut Lang was bought by Theory and two new designers were installed to take the place of Lang himself (who is now tending his garden and keeping chickens at his $25mil Long island mansion). Anyway, the new collection has been released and I was wondering if anybody had seen it yet, especially the classic Lang items like jeans and jackets and such?

Anyway, I don't live near a place that carries the new collection, so I'm just curious to hear if others have seen it and if it is any better than I'm expecting (personally, I'm still bewildered by the thought that Lang without Lang is ever going to work or who their target demographic even is).

From what I have heard, though, it's something like Theory only 30% more expensive, and with none of Lang's odd innovation. I'm also curious if they will still use Italian factories or if they will move the stuff to Theory's Chinese manufacturing.

Tags say Helmut Lang New York and the tag below it says made in China. I think I looked at it for 1.2 seconds before dismissing it.

There's nothing helmut lang about the new line, but they're decent pieces of clothing, I actually like a couple of the items.

I thought so... so disappointing, but I don't think we'll be seeing this collection around too long. I give it two seasons, three if they have one standout item that sells well.

I sadly thought and expected this as well. It's such a shame and, again, I really don't understand what Link Theory expects to get from this or from wasting several million $$$ on the Lang name. Lang's primary customer won't get into this (they're already well aware that Lang himself has nothing to do with this) and if they are trying to get into the youth market who wants the next "it" thing... Lang never has been nor will be that.

I really don't understand it. Theory itself, ISN'T a bad brand. Is it overpriced and not as well made as it should be? Yes. But at a discount, they make some really cool pieces. I own some Theory items, and I'm not at all dissatisfied with them. But why, WHY make Lang into Theory pt 2? I don't get it at all.

Has anyone here talking shit actually seen the new Lang gear? It's really not that bad. The designer team are very talented, it's just nothing like real Lang.

I'm sure at some point I'll pick up some of the stuff on sale. I liked what I saw, personally. Didn't remind me of Theory at all.

Maybe they should just put the brand out of its misery.

has anyone thought of what does one call the stuff in your closet from helmut lang made by helmut lang, whether pre-prada or prada years?

    "helmut lang helmut lang"?
    "original helmut lang"?

i have a few pre-prada lang items that i refer to as "pre-prada helmut lang" but is this new stuff called "theory helmut lang"? or "post-prada helmut lang"?

Why wouldn't it just be Helmut Lang?

It's like trying to segment your Gucci wardrobe into pre-Tom Ford and post Tom Ford, etc.

At the end of the day, it's a brand name with countless nameless designers behind it, save the creative directors.

Eh... I don't know, because Pre-Prada and Post-Prada Lang are very different in terms of little details. Pre-Prada was largely produced by Gibo, which is one of the highest-quality manufacturers around. Post-Prada, they switched Lang to one of their own makers.

When Prada bought Lang, they intended him to be their "entry level" brand and so lowered the quality and the price (Prada was to the be "standard," Miu Miu for a younger crowd, and Jil was to be their top line). So, while the style in the Post-Prada garments may have been really neat, very few would say that the quality ever matched up to the stuff in the mid-to-late 1990's.

yeah, i definitely recall a slight quality, and even fit, shift when prada bought out HL. anyway, it's disturbing to see a name like that (except for institutions like chanel, dior, etc) that is in no way connected to its original designer. same can be said for jil sander I suppose. furthermore, if it's made in china, it does not warrent high end prices- no matter the level of construction.
