After Connery and Craig I think that Pierce Brosnan best captured Bond. His portrayal of an unraveling assassin in "The Matador" was also an amusing followup after his tour as Bond was over. Maybe someday Styleforum will take up the proper pairing of Speedo with cowboy boots.

I thought Rowan Atkinson did a fairly good job of portraying the quintessential, dark English spy. It's all business with him.

I am a huge le Carre fan, although I did find that he got a bit strident and hectoring in his later books. His dislike for America, and the CIA, got a bit tiresome, whether justified or not (and I have no idea if it was). I recall that George Smiley always wore ill-fitting expensive clothes, but I don't remember it being a tailor scheme to get him to pay for extra fabric. Do you recall where that was mentioned? I find it hard to believe any real-life tailor would do that.

His own experiences are from the 1960s when his Circus was a bunch of older guys who went to Oxford in the 1930s and spent World War 2 lurking in the shadows while the cool kids hung out with Bomber Harris and Bernard Montgomery, so I believe the Smiley vs. Karla stuff but I have no idea how he manages to stay current with a world of secrecy. For Night Manager and maybe Tailor of Panama I saw he found some fanboys in the DEA who told him everything they could about Latin and South American shenanigans, but for his final works, which touched on the war on terror??? No idea.

I don't remember where I saw the bit about his tailor unfortunately. However he looks sharp enough in the 2011 Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Anyone know who dressed these guys? I saw Bill Heydon was Huntsman.

Other potential Bonds?

Henry Cavill, who was considered too young back in 2006, is getting to be the right age, and certainly has the physical presence to portray a brutish Bond, but he might be too typecast as a goody two shoes. Plus if Man From UNCLE is any indication, he'll be more of a Moore than a Connery which I doubt is what fans want right now given the success of a brooding angry Craig.

only the first Daniel Craig JB "Casino Royale" was still Brioni and Turnbull & Asser for shirts I believe. Afterwards all Daniel Craig JB movies were TF.

Most people probably wouldn't notice this change but for #menswear nerds this was a probably a good choice. Bond is an outsider in his organization, and I think TF is good at making stuff that's just a bit different from the norm without getting too fashion forward. M can wear the Brioni.

I wasn't doubting you, by the way, about Smiley and his tailor, I was just curious which book that was mentioned. I was not a huge fan of the 2011 film. I much prefer the Alec Guiness series. I think the book is just too rich and complex to work as a 2 hour movie. On the other hand, I thought the Night Manager series was excellent, probably in part because I don't recall anything from the book, which was not one of my favorites.

I've never watched a bBond film, but I really dug Craig's wardrobe in Knives Out, which was a really fun movie.
Que?

I remember being allowed at age 10 to finally stay up and watch the Sunday Movie of the Week in 1976. It was Goldfinger and I was hooked instantly.

who do you think would win in a fight:
Connery Bond vs. Jason Bourne?
Craig Bond vs. Bourne ?
I'm too busy thinking about Godzilla vs Kong. I mean in the last movie he was a thermonuclear weapon melting three-headed space monsters and now he's fighting a big Monkey Ninja?

I've never watched or listened to tonnes of pop culture.

The bond movies never seemed very appealing to me. The only aspects that appealed to me were the clothing, and the Bond Suits blog has that covered for me.

fun movie and agree on the clothes

craigs southern accent was pretty terrible and an odd choice because not clear why his character needed to be southern in Massachusetts but I still liked it

also, Ana de Armas

I enjoyed how goofy and overdone his accent sounded, I think it actually enhanced the humorous parts of the film. I interpreted that as the character making fun of himself.

Ana de Armas was great in her role in the movie and made an entertaining duo with Craig. I had no idea she very attractive until I googled her after. The film didn't sexualize her at all, which is a pretty big contrast to the average movie.

The goofy accent was funny and I loved Chris Evans’ line “What is this CSI KFC?”

Also, isn’t Armas in the new Bond flick?
