"That brings me to ties. It has always struck me as bizarre to pay big money for ties. I look for ties of decent quality that have been marked down to $8 to $12 apiece. I have paid as little as $5. But really cheap ties bring a dilemma. If I stain a cheap tie, how do I justify paying $3 or $4 to dry clean it? I usually resolve that by hanging the tie in my closet and hoping the stain will disappear. That only occasionally works. If I like the tie, I cave in and take it to the dry cleaner." *passes out*

At least he's not alone. I think he's pretty much 'corporate standard' now.

This forum has destroyed me...I can not sit in a meeting with a dozen corporate types without spending at least half the meeting cringing at the clothing on display.

Well, I'm wearing an OCBD that I bought from Costco for $15 and some gray wool Bill Blass pants I got from the same establishment for about $33. However, I am wearing them with my W.W. Chan jacket in Porter & Harding Glorious Twelfth gun-club check that was not particularly cheap and a J. Press wool tie that I got on sale, albeit for a good deal more than $5. In all, I like to fancy I cut a reasonably elegant figure, the cheap duds notwithstanding.

I think this is the hallmark of well-dressed gentleman. Not everything in one's outfit has to be MTM, bespoke or just plain expensive. If you look good, you look good, no matter how you put it together.
