Well the Loake Birkdales arrived today (thankfully !)
They are very nice but probably too 'pointy' for most on here,Loake describe the toe as 'Almond shaped' imo its not that pointy but more 'snipey' (as we described dogs heads) than my Alfred Sargent Stepneys .
The leather seems a step up from the 1880 range and streets ahead of the Royal but that's reflected in the price.
I think that Loake have been wise in their approach of offering various ranges in different qualities,a bit like Ford used to do with their cars L,XL,GXL,Ghia.
The Loake Birkdale isnt as good quality as the C&J Pembroke for instance but it is £200 cheaper, its a bit like comparing a Ford Escort Ghia to a Porsche ?
When JS made his comment to MrK about the seam on the Loake being due to cost cutting the interesting question to him would have been 'yes I see,so can you suggest a better quality shoe at the same price as the Royal'?
We really to get what we pay for comparitively, with the 30% reduction I am happy with the Birkdales,I really like the colour too.

Yes we should get what we pay for, and the Loake Royals fall in this category IMO, i've got them for nearly 10 years now, i think i paid £120 IIRC (they are a bit more expensive now), and as they seem to be pretty indestructible i think it was a good purchase. The corrected grain leather ages...correctly !

I was doing a search about them, some said Cheaney made them for Fife, some others C&J - or is it simply Loake ?...
BTW no longwings offering at the moment at C&J apparently.
The Mr.Knightley join on the Hoggs Kenmore indicate Loake manufacture. Last 3625/7 on inside of shoe is also a Loake number.

They get far more wear than my Royals. Uppers not shiny polished leather. More supple too.

I think that once the Covid-19 epidemic has died down that it won't take long for society to go back to its old ways, people soon forget!
The banks, politicians and business bosses will revert back to their greedy ways.
I hope that things will change and people realise, that we don't have to rely on those in "power" as much. Where I live, I have noticed that over the years, society has changed dramatically, the old working class no longer exists, we have an underclass and I don't mean that to sound derogatory, it's just the way that things have become. The old working classes have become more middle class, this is because of the non existence of jobs that would once upon a time have been classed as working class.
I still consider myself to be working class, but in actual fact I am probably middle class, in my life style. I have gone from being an electrical engineer working in a coal mine, to a job lecturing, but now lucky enough to be able to be semi retired, and work when it suits me, which at the moment is not at all.
This brings me back to clothes and style, and the lack of it in the broader society, I don't expect everybody to dress in our "look", as that would be boring, but I think that our throw away society , encourages a lack of imagination. As a young teenage Mod, l could guarantee that when I met up with my mates, that we would all look different, but follow a code.
This was partly due to oneupmanship, where you wouldn't let mates know where you got your latest gear from, same style different label etc.
Sorry I know this is drifting off topic but I’m five hours behind most of you! Anyway pretty much concur with most of this and I applaud you for admitting your rise in status. I never got too wrapped up in this obsession some people have with the class system as my family background is so checkered but by whatever measurement used, if you’ve got yourself into a white collar job, paid off your gaff and semi retired in your fifties there aren’t many markers of working class there any more. For some people it’s an attitude which is fair enough but I know loads of lads who come from very modest council house backgrounds with unemployed / under employed / barely employed parents and little financial security in their youth who one way or another have done very well for themselves with property, vehicles, foreign holidays, disposable income etc - all the trappings off financial security and affluence but who would punch you in the face of you accused them of being middle class!
It would be if there was a return to better attitudes and ‘buy British’ type themes but I don’t see it. After 9/11 the airlines used it as an excuse to jack up prices, change fees, baggage fees etc and creamed off billions in profit. Now they’re coming cap in hand for another bail out. When I rent a car for work there still a fuel surcharge for when it was $5 a gallon several years ago. Petrol is now $1.85 a gallon here, the lowest it’s been in 20 years. I can see companies everywhere using this as an excuse for enforced austerity and cutbacks, no pay rises or bonuses (except for the top dogs of course) ... I’m very cynical of the ‘normal’ that we’ll be faced with on the other side of this.

@Thin White Duke yeah they’re using this crisis as an excuse for a power-grab by the feds to strip away many liberties. I’m guessing the “emergency” measures on the state and federal levels will still be in place after the crisis passes.
As far as people buying domestic stuff and a return to affordable domestic textile production, I don’t see it happening. As of now, Statsside, if you’re buying American-made Engineered garments, Yuketen, etc., the price point is rather prohibitive for most... and if they’re buying socks, undergarments, etc., there isn’t much for American made smalls
I don’t know if the throwaway culture can be dialed back/fixed as it seems a bell that can’t be unrung. People have had a taste of cheap, throwaway clothing and have made a “fashion” out of it— pajama bottoms, name-brand sweatpants bought at big-box department stores on the cheap.
If overnight the above were to happen where buying domestically-made is the only choice, I think sewing machines might enjoy a surge in popularity.
Anyway, I’m on the coffee so pardon my ramblings!

I recently mentioned those two albums, both released in 1982.

The Jam - The Gift - 1982.jpg

The good.jpg

The art cover is close. They are both good albums (The 4skins album is far from being "oi ****"). Funnily two musicians from each band wear a very similar outfit. It's even more flagrant when you put them side by side ! Same MA-1, Yellow tops, Both wear boots, the main difference is the trousers, Jeans for one, Sta-prest for the other... Both outfits i could wear today, maybe with smarter boots though.

Yeah interesting stuff.
I think the lad out of Four Skins used to post on here as Hoxton Tom McCourt or something like that. I have no idea if he has anything to do with the Hoxton monkey jacket I just got.

Yeah that was Tom McCourt.?? Nought to do with the monkey jackets.

He was nicknamed Hoxton Tom because it's the place in London he comes from i think. Yes he posted on MtS under the name Tom mc666 and is a very nice guy. Speaking of Monkey jackets, i remember it was discussed on the thread once, and i reminded him he was wearing one on the picture of the aforementioned album back cover photo, he didn't even remember !
