I think, as @Thin White Duke says, when we look back at different decades the good stuff is often obscured by the popular images of the times.

My own liking for the 1980s was partly as a result of having a friend with a shop specialising in expensive Italian clothing and, because he was a friend, often being able to pick up those exquisite pieces at a reduced price :) He often explained to me how he bought very wisely when he went on trips to Pitti and other Italian sources - seeking out only those bits that would really work in these damp islands. Thus the more extreme pieces were avoided. He 'saved us from ourselves'.

The 1990's that followed were largely a disappointment for me relieved, I suppose, by Britpop elements.

Trying to remember my typical 'everyday casual look' in last decades, of course in a schematic way. Not when i dress up. There are some items like : Levi's 501 Jeans, Fred perry shirts, DM 3 eyes shoes, that i never stopped to wear...

Born 1965.

1970s Duffle coat. Lacoste/sweat shirt. Jeans slightly flared. Kickers/Clarks

1980s MA-1/Harrington/Trucker. Fred Perry/V Neck. Blue Levi's Jeans/Sta Prest. Dr Martens/Dexter/Weston

1990s Squall Parka/Leather/suede jacket. TShirt/Crew neck. Black Levi's Jeans/Cotton slacks. Air Jordan/Church's

2000s Millet (Gore tex). shirt/Uniqlo cashmere crew neck. Paul Smith Jeans/Levi's persistant blue. Paraboot Michael

2010s Crombie/Chesterfield/Baracuta. BD poplin shirt/Vneck. Lee Riders Jeans. DMshoes/Loake/Church's

2020s Loden coat/Sport coat/Mac. Cardigan. OCBD. Lee/Levi's/Wrangler jeans/Cords. Weejuns/sooner or later Suede Carvil 'Dylan'

Not a proper SF 'fit' pic, but just to give you an idea of the Cordings blazer, here in a minimalist approach with black denim jeans and a black roll neck.

Nice one Inspector, proves that TLGO is about quality clothes, dressing age appropriately and having a bit of imagination and NOT about being a fossilised skinhead dressing as a recycled teenager.

That look is a very old school English one and hard to pull-off. It seems to demand the most exquisite quality and cut - unless you want to look like the good ole Geography teacher:smile:

I have been thinking a bit about this, obviously no one wants to look 'too Country' or too anything else (imo) otherwise it becomes a bit like fancy dress.
I have mentioned my only one overtly 'skinhead' item to be worn at a time rule, maybe I would do the same with Country type items, no Tweed Blazer with grain leather Brogues for instance.
Has anyone got better suggestions on how to mix Country and City clothes/footwear ?

I remember your 'rule' very well @cerneabbas and do keep it in mind as a kind of benchmark.

But I find myself, depending on the occasion and my mood, wanting to go a bit further, perhaps including two or more items from a particular look or style.

So, yesterday when I ventured into rural Suffolk I felt fairly comfortable wearing suede shoes with Dainite sole (the new ones actually) with a corduroy jacket and a cap. Had I been going into town I would almost certainly have swapped either the jacket for a blazer (or similar) or the rustic shoes for loafers. The cap would have stayed at home.

Good point MrK,location and circumstances need to be taken into consideration.
I think that all the items that you have chosen integrate with each other well without giving the impression that you are trying to dress like a country squire.
To be honest I don't see your suede shoes as particularly Country they do fit in nicely though.

On the subject of suede shoes, one of my (many) new years resolutions was to stop buying shoes, particuarly Goodyear welted shoes.
Well I got to the 10th of January without being tempted but whilst in Liberty I saw the suede Sanders Kelso.
Now I know that there's not a lot of love for boots in general on TLGO but I have several pairs of Goodyear welted boots (a few more than I need) and I do like these Sanders boots.
I am not keen on the leather version but I am very tempted by the suede ones, what may save me from myself here is that I don't think that they are very versatile and could only be worn with jeans.
I do wish that I had seen them before I bought my Desert boots,I think that if I had bought the Sanders I would wear them more often.

I actually felt the same reading MrK's post and looking at the pictures : don't find the suede Loakes especially 'country' either.

I try to apply the one/two item rule, but it is not easy, especially if you count some mainstream items like BD shirts or Jeans…

I've never been a great fan of Desert Boots, i finally bought a pair a couple of years ago, because i really liked the color (cola) but they hardly see any wear...

I don't think that a Plain or Striped BD and jeans would be to bad (unless the jeans were turned up above the ankles ), BD shirts, jeans,Lambswool or Shetland jumpers are all mainstream.
I bought the Desert boots on a whim like a lot of other things, yet another of my 2019 resolutions is to be more disciplined and to buy less but better quality....and living up to that I have ordered a Gitman Vintage BD that I found in a sale,I rate the quality but the prices !!! they are now £155 here which I will not pay for a shirt.

I'm not really buying anything now, just wearing. My 2018 purchases were hankies, umbrella and cufflinks as replacement for worn out/broken/retired equivalents. Not sure where to go from here, for me there is no imperative (other than stuff simply wearing out) that will allow me to trade up and pare down to a greater perfection.
