I personally know a rabbi that deems glass is like earthenware, as it's made from sand, hence is absorbent and one must have two sets.

I have been told by two mashgiach that one need only rinse them off as they are non-absorbent. Speaking of mashgiach, some rabbis will not grant their hechsher if the mashgiach is female.

The "Practically?" comment came from an 87 year old Jewish lady that told me she accepted the same glass plates were kosher but that her eyes just told her it was wrong as she needed to see two different patterns so she would know things had not been mixed, therefore glass plates were unacceptable to her.

my sister, may she rot in hell, is "observant" but she is a huge cheater. so she hs come up with a whole group of laws that don't make any sense, because she assumes that nobody else in the family would second guess her. so she'll eat in a fish resteraunt, and eat a kosher fish, but it could be served off dishesor even cooked on pots taht were used for shellfish.

i put the disclaimer there because the conclusion of these laws is based on a very large volume of text, that is best learned in a certain order. to try and sum it all up in a few paragraphs and cover everything and answer all uncertainty is pretty much impossible. i know there are things i did not address in full, and its precisely because of that that i am hesitant to really make these posts. i do anyways in the hope they offer some clarity. yes its complicated, but i am not confused. i just know that i could not possibly explain everything in full.

i can see why you would view these things as dodgy, but i would not say they are open to personal interpretation. i would say, that in the end game, ie, specific practical applications, often times there are more than one opinion. in that situation, some rabbis, based on what their rabbi told them and back to his rabbi.... will decide one way, and others the other, one is strict, one is lenient. but this isnt a personal decision like i choose to wear gray pants today. its a decision that a person made to follow a set opinion on a practical application of the law, while another person follows what his rabbi said. he can not then change his mind the next day. he must be consistent.

whatever, im not sure i am conveying what i want to. this would be better as in person conversation than in posting. ill leave it at that.

Can someone give me the rationale as to why wine must be made only by Jews to be kosher? Given it is basically fruit, if nothing traif gets added, I really have no understanding about this.

A short answer in case no one has time (it is friday) for a long answer. Two reasons: fear that it might be made with idolatorus sacramental use in mind and a way of creating separation to avoid wanton merriment with gentiles. Mostly the former.
