the time is right to talk about 'the Japan.' I know a lot of you weirdos live in Tokyo, as do I. Discuss.

Very beautiful and interesting country. I might consider living in Kyoto/Osaka/Kobe but I would never live in Tokyo. The pace of life there seems extreme, and I don't mean that in a good way. Cool city to visit, though.

Am planning on visiting next August for a conference (was supposed to be this August, but was postponed because of the earthquake).

I guess I should be ambivalent about it since the Japanese brutalized my people on the Korean Peninsula. But am mostly looking forward to it.

Japan, I want to come and stay for a while (6 months - 1 year). Can you tell me is there much scope for foreigners to get jobs that are NOT teaching english? I don't mind teaching English and I'm not looking to get rich working a 9-5 over there I'd just like to keep working in my field (building sites and pages for websites)

I don't know if many people get rich working a 9-5 here... but if you had money to spend and just want to be here while being able to work on your websites remotely, that wouldn't be a problem. You could go to a language school and get a sponsored visa for awhile, get a foreigner-friendly real estate broker to rent a weekly mansion to you, it's not impossible to come over here if you have a little money and know what you're gonna do. Even the Nigerian hustlers who come here know what they're gonna do with their time.

Japan is a good place to live, there's just tons of ******* rules and guidelines and pictograms and suggestions and orderly order, you get a phone book on how to dispose of every conceivable trash item you could possibly have when you move to a new place. I kind of like that though, I just came from a place that has zero order or standards for civilized living. Very pleasant change for me.

You are in the honeymoon phase right now. 1 year from now some of the cultural aspects will drive you insane. 3 years from now you will leave but you will be back again within a year or two, never to leave again. :teach:

I dunno man, I've been here before plenty and have figured I was gonna live here for the past 10 years, kinda late on realizing that idea but I'm here... I don't think anything can be as bad as the 8 years I spent in Seoul, not as far as cultural oddities and frustrating dumb people go. I'm pretty used to the 6 to 10-person delegations when it comes to asking the most mundane of questions, the racism, and brainless consumerism, the weird police questioning, and paying out the nose for silly imported things.

On the other hand, I don't really plan on going out of my house a lot in Japan, apart from going out to eat and buying life necessities, and the occasional nature trip for some fresh air. Thinking about taking up fishing soon. Already done most of the Tokyo touristy stuff in the past, looking forward to buying a car someday and going to Karuizawa or something. :slayer:

yea...good point, you aren't really fresh off the boat here. But I expect you will still have some fun wtf moments...I still do after 15 years. It is one of the things I love about it here.
