The ideal shape for cuff links

I'm partial to circle or close shapes (hexagon, octagon...).

All are OK so long as they are not too big and get in the way. I voted oval because they generally follow the line of the cuff better and are not likely to snag when taking off the jacket as irregular or angled shapes can do.

I like sterling knots. I also have a pair of sterling owl heads, with some sort of gemstone eyes, I like.

I don't like 'em big or gaudy.

I think sterling knots are the perfect links. And by keeping your links double sided you stop yourself from using links that are too big. If they don't fit through the buttonhole you probably shouldn't be using them.
