You're a rock throw away from the Armory. Just walk in and ask for suggestions.

I certainly will at some point, but I assume that like most shops, The Armory either does their own services in-house, or have a specific alterationist they work with, and will be reluctant to recommend outside of those.[EDIT: Didn't see the reply posts about Sam Wazin] And as much as I'd love to ask those guys to hem my pants, I have a feeling it'll be a little outside of my price range. Which leads me to...

I ended up giving Tailors Atelier on 7th street a try after noticing they were barely five minutes away on foot. Decent enough shop, albeit unmarked, and no waiting room so I had to wait on the steps to the sidewalk. Clean, but not what I would necessarily call luxurious, but also not the complete mess alterations shops can be. The purveyor was friendly, made some decent barber-like small talk, insisted on giving me a pair of shoes he had lying around (???), and then charged $30 for a cuff hem and $55 to shorten a pair of sleeves!

Is this just what I can expect as a 'reasonable' price in NYC? I'm not trying to make sour grapes here, but the tailor I briefly apprenticed under for a summer charged $15 and $20 for those services (which was after multiple price hikes, he used to charge $10 & $15) It was $20 and $30 at my preferred tailor back in MSP. I was expecting an upcharge for NYC, but that's beyond even what the most expensive alterationist in Minneapolis was charging. $55 for what I know from experience is >20 minutes of labour just feels absurd.

Did I get ripped off here, or is this just what I can expect from here on out?

Hemming pants price definitely have gone up, not sure about $30 though. Think for hem just find some reasonable dry cleaners

I get charged around $20 for hem and cuff? But that's out in Long Island. City hem and cuff is probably around $30 I would assume. Dropping the back collar at Sam is $60 so ?

I don't have my most recent tickets where I had a lot of stuff done, but I think Wazin is $30 for hem and cuff (I think plain bottom maybe a little less at like 20 or 25). Waist/seat/crotch adjustments are 20/each and lower leg taper is 40 I think.

For jackets, each sleeve adjustment is $30 (so $60 total for both sleeves) now--I think it used to be 20/per; take-in/let-out Jacket sides is $90; lower collar as mentioned above is $60. Buttonholes I think are still $80.

Again, I could be mis-remembering so I'd defer to his actual pricing but this should give most of y'all a rough estimate of what you'll be paying if you go to him.

have a friend who inherited a dinner jacket that doesn't really fit, i haven't seen it and I'm not sure to what degree it needs to be altered. could be major.. but he's looking to have it recut rather than purchase another jacket and is aware it could be costly. who would you trust in nyc with this kind of job? ideally i'd give him two options, one a little less expensive and then maybe one more expensive.

Canadian here and I'll be visiting New York at the end of the month. Is it worth it to pay a visit to a bespoke tailor even if I don't plan on coming back too frequently? In an ideal world, I'd like to be able to conduct subsequent fittings via Zoom/video call. Anyone have any experience with this?

Been to this guy several times. For my first job, had a pair of heels replaced on my Carmina Cordovan oxfords with Vibram heels, 30 dollars. Second job... Edward Green Dover full sole replacement (he doesn't have Danite soles, so I opted for the Vibram equivalent). 95 dollars. Very nice solid job, clean stitching all around. I asked him about metal toe tips and he quoted me 50 dollars.

Haven't tried him myself, but figured it's another option for items that don't require Wazin-level service.
