Does anyone here live off the grid, or otherwise rely heavily on solar/wind?

Had a look at the backyard and it's in ruins from the winds last Sunday night. Looking forward to this weekend.

Any thoughts on Hinkley or Sonneman for lighting? From a quality standpoint compared to each other?

Someone here is 100% sustainable - I think FlyingMonkey?

It's our aim - nowhere near yet. Currently, we have no heating or AC of any kind, but we still use electricity for other normal things. Solar panels will be going on next year for that. Then we should be 100% self-sufficient in energy.

Are you in a passive house?

Monkey has a blog detailing the construction of his house. I have misplaced the link, though. I don't recall if it is explicitly a passive house, but they certainly embraced a lot of the principles.

Oh, cool. @FlyingMonkey I'd love to learn more. I'm hoping to build an off-the-grid passive house and workshop in the next couple years and looking for any guidance and input.

I bit the bullet and bought a leaf blower today since bulk leaf pickup starts this coming week. No regrets at all.

I wound up buying a Toro corded model. It's Wirecutter's top choice, and supposedly more powerful than any battery ones. $57 bucks... easy choice for me over the $300 ego. I already had a 100 ft. extension cord for my string trimmer, and that just reaches the street from my outdoor outlets.

my lower back hurts from spending 4 hours in the yard today moving things and sweeping up leaves. Looks nice though

$57 vs $300 leaf blower does seem like a good proposition
