Doing the small pergola project to keep my mind off the day to day stress of work/covid.

My landscaper is putting in the 4 footers and will cut the patio stones accordingly.

I’m gonna go with toja grid system in 10x12 using 6x6s. I figure it will be a good mental/physical activity to figure out how to raise the system myself.

Now I just need to source the timbers. Was thinking cedar but my wife wants it stained a dark gray and it seems like a waste of good wood if I am going to stain it. Pressure treated is the other choice but I worry about it twisting (cracking doesn't bother me as I like the aesthetic).

Anyone have any ideas on where to source interesting lumber for 6x6s? I stumbled upon http://charclad.com/ and am getting a quote which i expect to be astronomical.

Sourcing any wood like that will probably be astronomical in price. I think getting some high quality cedar would be your best choice. I have looked at ordering wood for decks and other outdoor projects, and there are tons of species of you want to get fancy, but cedar has always been what I end up going with

Any good source for cedar? Around here cedar in 6x6s is all a custom order it isnt stocked in any of the lumber yards.

I don't have any experience with an online source! Sorry. I would assume that the lumber yards could source it for you though right?

where do you live? In my parts there are dedicated cedar fencing and decking lumber yards if you know where to find em

Yes. But its a custom order and winds up being almost 2k.

i can get it shipped from menards for around half that but dont love the idea of not being able to see what i am getting (no menards locally).

Interestingly charclad quoted me 1500CAD which is roughly the same for a cooler product with the torching done. They are looking into what the shipping would be.

It didnt occur to me that sourcing wood other than PT would be this hard.

for 1500CAD, assuming that Shipping is "Reasonable" I might go that route!

Shishigashira planted today. It's a solid seven feet and the trunk is very solid. Looking forward to the spring color.

Directly behind it is a pseudocamellia stewartia that's going in place of some scrub trees. Behind that is the Bloodgood that hasn't leafed out yet.

100 allium bulbs ordered last year.
93 alliums planted (7 seemed to be in rough shape)

93 alliums have sprouted. Cant ask for a better yield than that

Replaced (well until I broke the new one) and old small bar sink in the basement. This will work as our main sink when we redo the kitchen soon. Damn knockout didn’t work and I cracked the sink. ?
