I checked and we do in fact have 10 of them. These are my favorites…maybe 5 feet apart?

IMG_4689.jpeg

There’s another set that’s more like 10’ apart too…both of those are installed but likely well past expiration date.

Ironically none of them are very close to the kitchen. It is 1 inside and 1 outside every room that could conceivably be a bedroom. Maybe that’s code? But I have a hard time believing code mandates the 2 in the photo…

kitchen and living/dining room have vaulted ceilings too...so the smoke would fill a lot of space before it made it low enough to enter the halls where there are detectors.

Hard to tell if y'all are serious about deleting your smoke detectors (other than kitchen), if so that's pretty wild. Between all the safety training indoctrination at work (including risk assessments) and the guy who almost burnt my house down while refinishing the wood floors, I can't really imagine not having them.

Current house was a mix of low voltage smoke alarms tied into the security system and separate (ancient) 110v hardwired for a few. Deleted them all and replaced with a mix of hardwired and 10yr battery Nests that combine smoke/CO/light. Two packs at Costco were very reasonable, maybe $160-200ish?

My only reservation then was that while networked, they do not contact the Fire Dept., just App notification.

To be fair I do want smoke detectors (and more than half of them are plugged in and seem to still work...just EOL).

I'm just not sure I need 10 of them...and unless I can find new ones that match the existing brackets/wires, I don't really want to spend hundreds of dollars AND have to rewire/reinstall and possibly have to touch up paint.

Our house is hardwired with smoke detectors linked to our security company. More than a few times they have called when they went off from cooking. Had to replace them all a couple years ago and I recall it was like $1,300.

The other option was ripping them all out, patching the holes, paint matching, then buying new ones to hang there...I figure it was worth the cost.

Isn't code to have just one wired smoke detector?

I had a hard time finding a decent looking slim wired detector. Ended up ordering the ****** combo smoke + co detector. I've yet to replace the battery powered ones.

A doorbell chime is another device I'm having a hard time finding. ADT security system came with a panel but no chime. I'd have to get a separate Google Nest hub, which I wouldn't be able to mount on the wall.

Edit: Not sure why the brand name was censored. Begins with K.

Wow - scoundrels got subliminal messaging even in smoke detectors?

Gonna cancel the order.

Yeah, that looks redundant, must have made someone feel very, very safe!

One per floor is typical. One in each bedroom sounds good, the rest might be ... overkill? IDK.

When we owned a rental, I remember the property manager calling me about the smoke alarms and how he couldn't find batteries. They looked like a half size AA, PIA to find them locally but Amazon came through.

The market for a device that calls the auhorities when there's smoke in the house is very small.
Twist one up to relax, then bam, next think you hear is sirens and see guys with badges.

Code here is must have one immediately inside or outside each bedroom. You need smoke and CO detectors in kitchen, laundry room, and utility rooms (or if a room has something like a water heater).

I too pulled off the smoke detector near the kitchen. I am feeling much better now that you degenerates have done the same.

Isn't there a new standard that deals with cooking false alarms?

Since you guys are talking about it, I just looked- our house has detectors in every bedroom and two in the main hallway, but none in the kitchen/dining/living room. So the closest one to the stove is probably 20 feet away in the hall. That seems unusual.

all of ours are functioning . we have a great hood vent , roasting a chicken is just about the only thing that would set them off and we switched to the sittin' method . no more smoke .

we have a couple close to the oven , one around the corner that is really very close but never went off and another about ~20 feet away but in direct line of vision and would alert after about an hour of dry roasting a bird
