@ValidusLA how are things going for you and your family?

Thanks for asking.

Ehhh. At least we have a good and steady place to live.
I'm way luckier than like....99% of everyone affected (in Pasadena/Altadena at least). Even if underinsured.

We are focusing on getting my daughter's life back to normal, and mostly there so far.

People and businesses around us have been insanely generous and helpful. Insurance and banks suck, of course.

Happy to hear you're doing okay (at least relatively). That last point is inarguable.

Having read this tragic story a couple days ago about a home fire in an upper middle class suburb of Detroit, an in home sprinkler system sounds great. This family apparently did not even have smoke alarms and 3 kids died. Like WTF?? Heart breaking but at the same time, parents should probably be charged for being derelicts.

Check those smoke detectors regularly. Might add a few more to the Nest network...

My smoke detectors starting chirping a few years ago. At first I thought it was low battery but once I replaced the battery they kept chirping. Did some research and found out my smoke detector went bad. Instead of replacing the detector, I just pulled them all out.

That’s where mine are…half are pulled out too.

But damn, We have like 10 of them. That’s a lot of work and money to replace. I wish they had at least gone with a brand I can find bulk packs of at Costco or something.

I'll replace all of mine when I'm ready to sell my house and move in with my gf. Until then, the smoke detectors are going to stay pulled out.

I feel like everyone that actually cooks has removed the closest smoke detector to their kitchen. You sear a steak or run the broiler for nine seconds, *beep* *beep* *beep*.

Nope! Bye bye smoke detector.

Because of the LA fires, I pretty much canceled building a place too outside of the city now. My place almost went up in smoke, and I thought I was at a "safe" distance. I hate the traffic (too many goddamn people), and that's main reason I want to bone out. If I do end up doing something, I am thinking of something like this.

Hard to tell if y'all are serious about deleting your smoke detectors (other than kitchen), if so that's pretty wild. Between all the safety training indoctrination at work (including risk assessments) and the guy who almost burnt my house down while refinishing the wood floors, I can't really imagine not having them.

Current house was a mix of low voltage smoke alarms tied into the security system and separate (ancient) 110v hardwired for a few. Deleted them all and replaced with a mix of hardwired and 10yr battery Nests that combine smoke/CO/light. Two packs at Costco were very reasonable, maybe $160-200ish?

My only reservation then was that while networked, they do not contact the Fire Dept., just App notification.

Smoke detector closest to my stove which is still a pretty good distance away.
